16-Day Water Supply Interruption
By Mpho Moloi
Residents of Emfuleni Local Municipality are set to experience a significant water supply interruption lasting 16 days, commencing on Friday, 30 May 2025, at 06:00 and concluding on Saturday, 14 June 2025, at 06:00. This planned shutdown is necessitated by Rand Water’s mandatory Dam Safety Evaluation (DSE) and cleaning operations at Sasolburg Reservoir No. 1.
Areas Affected
The shutdown will impact several areas within the municipality, including:
• Bedworthpark
• Sharpeville
• Tshepiso
• Boipatong
• Bophelong and Bophelong Extensions
• Bonanne
• Vanderbijlpark
• Surrounding plots
During this period, the reduced pressure in the A15 pipeline will result in water supply disruptions affecting the Bedworthpark, Sharpeville, and Vanderbijlpark reservoir meters.
Reason for the Shutdown
The primary objective of this maintenance is to ensure the structural integrity and safety of Sasolburg Reservoir No. 1. The Dam Safety Evaluation is a regulatory requirement aimed at preventing potential failures that could have catastrophic consequences for the community and the environment. The cleaning operations are also essential to maintain water quality standards and ensure the efficient functioning of the reservoir.
Alternative Water Supply Measures
Emfuleni Local Municipality has assured residents that alternative water supply measures will be implemented during the shutdown. Priority will be given to critical facilities such as clinics, hospitals, and schools. The municipality has issued tenders for additional water tankers to be stationed at strategic points across the affected areas. Residents are encouraged to store sufficient water ahead of the shutdown and to use water sparingly during this period.
Community Response and Concerns
The announcement has elicited mixed reactions from the community. While some residents understand the necessity of the maintenance work, others have expressed concerns about the duration of the shutdown and the adequacy of the alternative water supply measures. Previous incidents of water supply interruptions and infrastructure failures have eroded public confidence in the municipality’s ability to manage such situations effectively.
Historical Context
Emfuleni Local Municipality has faced ongoing challenges related to water supply and infrastructure maintenance. In the past five financial years, the municipality has reportedly lost water valued at over R3 billion due to leaks and ageing infrastructure. Efforts to address these issues have been hampered by financial constraints and administrative challenges.
