Emfuleni Local Municipality
Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) made announcement on Tuesday about the launch of ‘Lethabo’, an innovative AI WhatsApp Chatbot designed to guide residents through the prepaid meter TID (Token Identity) migration process. This initiative aims to ensure a smooth and hassle-free transition for all residents before the deadline of November 24, 2024.
Makhosonke Sangweni, the spokesperson for Emfuleni Local Municipality, expressed their pride in introducing this first-of-its-kind service in South Africa. Initially available in English, ‘Lethabo’ will soon expand its language support to include Sesotho and Afrikaans, ensuring that all residents can easily update their prepaid meters without any language barriers.
The prepaid meter TID migration process involves customers receiving two special 20-digit ‘key change’ tokens on their electricity purchase slips. This process might seem confusing to some customers, so ‘Lethabo’ is here to assist them. The AI Chatbot will provide all the necessary guidance and support to ensure a smooth transition for the residents.
To avail assistance and guidance regarding the TID Rollover and meter updates, customers can reach out to ‘Lethabo’ on WhatsApp at +27 87 250 2853.
## Background Information:
The Emfuleni Local Municipality’s TID Rollover project aims to migrate the current prepaid vending system from STS Edition 1 to the new STS Edition 2 software.
The existing software on all pre-paid meters in Emfuleni and South Africa is set to expire in November 2024. Therefore, it is crucial for customers to update their meters before the deadline to recharge with the new tokens and avoid any power disruptions.
The TID Rollover project was initiated as a pilot on October 1, 2023, to assess the migration process for the meters. The municipality has two Supply Group Codes (SGC) for meter installations. SGC 000297 has approximately 14,000 meters, while SGC 000394 has over 50,000 meters currently in operation.
To ensure a seamless software update process, the municipality will implement the key change process by issuing a separate and extra token to SGC 00297 consumers when they make their next purchase starting on November 7, 2023.
The TID project will also be extended to SGC 00394 consumers, and the rollout dates will be communicated through ELM’s social media platforms, website, and local media.
With only 12 months left until November 24, 2024, customers are advised to stay updated with municipal communication regarding the TID Rollover project to avoid the inconvenience of being left without electricity on the deadline date.
The municipality has mapped out a schedule to complete the project before the deadline, which allows sufficient time for addressing any potential issues that may arise.
In case customers receive an additional token and are unsure about what to do, they are advised not to panic. They can contact the Electricity Department Control Room for assistance at 087 310 3369, 087 562 0425, 087 562 0524, or via WhatsApp at 065 871 7483.
