Elon Musk and Donald Trump
By Thabo Mosia
Elon Musk, South African-born American Businessman, publicly endorsed former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday, urging Americans to vote in the 2024 election. Musk emphasized the importance of this election for the survival of the U.S. Constitution and democracy, calling it a “must-win” for Trump.
This endorsement follows a series of public statements Musk has made in recent months, supporting Trump’s campaign and expressing concerns about voter fraud, free speech, and gun rights. Musk’s appearance at the rally, where Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt in July, marked his most direct political intervention to date.
Elon Musk’s Speech: Rallying for Trump and Democracy
Taking the stage briefly during Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Musk spoke passionately about the importance of safeguarding the Constitution. He expressed concerns over voter ID laws and voter fraud, particularly in states like California, where voter ID requirements have been rolled back in response to new legislation.
Musk’s speech touched on issues he has frequently raised online, stating:
“The other side wants to take away your freedom of speech. They want to take away your right to bear arms, they want to take away your right to vote, effectively.”
Musk elaborated on how California’s SB 1174, which banned voter ID laws, threatens the integrity of elections:
“There are 14 states now that don’t require voter ID. California, where I used to live, just passed a law banning voter ID for voting. How are you supposed to have a proper election if there’s no ID? It’s meaningless.”
Free speech was another core theme of Musk’s address. He emphasized its importance for democracy and tied it to the necessity of the Second Amendment to protect First Amendment rights:
“You must have free speech in order to have democracy. That’s why it’s the First Amendment, and the Second Amendment is there to ensure that we have the First Amendment.”
Musk concluded his remarks by urging people to register to vote, especially in key swing states like Georgia and Arizona. He warned that failure to do so could result in this being the “last election” Americans will experience in a free democracy.
The Context of Musk’s Endorsement
Musk’s endorsement of Trump is significant for multiple reasons. It comes at a time when Trump’s campaign is focusing heavily on issues of voter fraud, election security, and individual freedoms. Musk has long been an outspoken advocate of free speech and has positioned himself as a critic of government overreach, particularly concerning tech regulation and censorship.
Musk’s relationship with Trump has evolved over the years. While the two have had disagreements in the past, especially regarding environmental policies and the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, they appear to have found common ground on issues of free speech, gun rights, and the protection of democracy.
In July 2024, following an assassination attempt on Trump, Musk took to X (formerly Twitter) to officially endorse the former president’s candidacy. This public endorsement has drawn significant attention, as Musk is one of the most high-profile business leaders to align himself with Trump in the current election cycle.
Musk’s Concerns About Voter ID and Election Integrity
A key part of Musk’s speech focused on voter ID laws and their role in ensuring fair elections. His reference to California’s SB 1174, which banned voter ID requirements, sparked a debate about election security and the potential for voter fraud.
Musk expressed disbelief that California had passed such a law, saying:
“I still can’t believe that’s real. So how are you supposed to have a good, proper election if there’s no ID?”
This statement taps into wider concerns within conservative circles about the integrity of elections, particularly in states where voter ID laws have been rolled back or eliminated. Supporters of these laws argue that they are necessary to prevent fraud, while opponents claim that they disproportionately affect minority and low-income voters, reducing voter turnout.
Musk’s alignment with Trump on this issue signals a broader concern about the direction of U.S. democracy, as both figures argue that voter ID laws are essential for preserving electoral integrity.
Freedom of Speech and the Second Amendment
Musk also took the opportunity to champion free speech, a subject that has been central to his public persona and business ventures, including his acquisition of X (formerly Twitter). He tied the preservation of free speech directly to the Second Amendment, stating that the right to bear arms is crucial to protecting all other freedoms.
“You must have free speech in order to have democracy,” Musk declared. “That’s why it’s the First Amendment, and the Second Amendment is there to ensure that we have the First Amendment.”
This rhetoric resonates with many conservative voters who view gun rights as fundamental to safeguarding other constitutional rights. Musk’s endorsement of Trump on these grounds reinforces his position as a defender of individual liberties in the face of what he perceives as government overreach.
A “Must-Win” Election for Trump
Perhaps the most significant aspect of Musk’s speech was his assertion that the 2024 election is the most important in American history. He emphasized the stakes, stating that a Trump victory was essential for preserving the Constitution and democracy.
“President Trump must win to preserve the Constitution,” Musk said. “He must win to preserve democracy in America. This is a must-win situation. Must-win.”
Musk’s warning that this could be the “last election” if Trump does not prevail underscores the existential nature of the election in his view. He encouraged the rally’s attendees to ensure that their friends and family members are registered to vote, especially in key battleground states like Georgia and Arizona.
Partnerships and Relief Efforts
In addition to his political endorsements, Musk highlighted the work his companies have been doing to support disaster relief efforts in the United States. He praised the partnership between SpaceX and the Trump campaign to bring Starlink internet services to victims of Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.
Musk’s involvement in these relief efforts showcases his broader vision of leveraging technology to address real-world problems. His appearance at the rally provided an opportunity to further align himself with Trump’s campaign, both in terms of policy and action.
Criticism of Biden and Harris
While Musk’s speech focused primarily on his support for Trump, he also took the opportunity to criticize the current administration, particularly President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Musk echoed many of Trump’s criticisms of the Biden administration’s handling of natural disasters and other crises, framing the current leadership as ineffective compared to Trump’s decisive action.
Musk’s comments about the Biden-Harris ticket extended beyond disaster relief, touching on broader concerns about voter fraud and the potential for a one-party state. Last week, Musk aired similar concerns on X, claiming that the 2024 election could be the “last” if Trump does not win.
“Enough non-citizens will be able to vote under Harris and running mate Tim Walz, effectively creating a one-party state,” Musk warned.
Trump and Musk’s Shared Vision
Musk’s appearance at the rally and his endorsement of Trump reflect a shared vision for America that prioritizes individual freedoms, limited government intervention, and a focus on election integrity. Both figures have positioned themselves as defenders of the Constitution, warning that the 2024 election could be a turning point for the nation.
Trump has praised Musk’s involvement in the campaign, stating last month that he would appoint the Tesla CEO to the “Government Efficiency Commission” if elected. Musk, for his part, has embraced this role, signaling that he is ready to play a more active role in shaping the future of U.S. governance.
