By Thabo Mosia – Farmer to Appear in Court
LADYBRAND, FREE STATE – An 82-year-old farmer is set to appear in the Ladybrand Magistrate Court today, 27 May 2024, facing serious allegations of attempted murder. The incident, which has raised concerns amongst local residents, came to light after the farmer allegedly shot and injured an 18-year-old man who was hunting on a nearby farm with his 19-year-old friend.
According to Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, spokesperson for the Free State Police, the dramatic sequence of events unfolded on the evening of Friday, 24 May 2024, at approximately 20:30. The two young men were hunting on a farm in the Ladybrand district when they were confronted by the neighbouring farmer.
“It’s alleged that the farmer confronted the young men aggressively, swearing at them,” stated Warrant Officer Mophiring. “Feeling threatened, the young men sped away in their car. The farmer, however, pursued them and began shooting. Tragically, the 18-year-old driver was struck in the back on the shoulder. His friend, aged 19, assumed control of the vehicle and drove to their farm, where the injured young man’s uncle promptly transported him to a hospital in Bloemfontein for urgent medical treatment.”
The shocking incident was reported to the police the following day, Saturday, 25 May 2024. Law enforcement authorities swiftly acted, tracing and arresting the suspect. The police also seized the farmer’s firearm, which will undergo ballistic analysis as evidence in the case.
The arrest was carried out by the combined efforts of Police Detectives, the Ladybrand K9 Unit, and the Ladybrand Vispol.
