Ekurhuleni on High Alert
By Lerato Mpembe
The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) remains vigilant after recent disruptive storms caused significant damage in the area. Earlier this week, severe thunderstorms led to the destruction of several homes and resulted in injuries to two individuals.
DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi reported that a coordinated effort involving emergency officials and law enforcement was promptly initiated to repair the affected homes. “The City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services remains on high alert for any eventualities that might happen around the city,” Ntladi stated. He also urged residents to stay vigilant, with more rain expected in the coming days. “We would like to send and spread the same safety message to the residents of the City of Ekurhuleni to be on high alert for flooding that is expected around the city.”
Recent Weather Events and Impact
The recent storms have exacerbated concerns about infrastructure resilience and public safety in Ekurhuleni. In November 2024, South Africa declared a national disaster after floods and storms caused widespread damage across several provinces, including Gauteng. These events have highlighted the need for improved disaster preparedness and response strategies.
Weather Forecast and Preparedness Measures
The South African Weather Service has forecasted continued rainfall and potential thunderstorms in the Ekurhuleni region over the next week. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
Safety Recommendations for Residents
DEMS has issued several safety guidelines for residents during this period of adverse weather:
• Stay Informed: Regularly check weather updates through reliable sources such as the South African Weather Service and local news outlets.
• Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not attempt to cross flooded roads or bridges, whether on foot or in a vehicle.
• Secure Property: Ensure that your home is safeguarded against potential flooding by clearing gutters and securing outdoor items that could be displaced by strong winds.
• Emergency Contacts: Keep emergency numbers handy. In case of life-threatening situations, contact the Ekurhuleni Emergency Line at 011 458 0911 or the national toll-free number 10177.
Community Response and Infrastructure Repairs
In response to the damage caused by the storms, the City’s Roads and Stormwater Department has been actively working to repair infrastructure, including the reconstruction of blocked stormwater drainages to mitigate flooding risks.
Residents are encouraged to report any infrastructure issues, such as potholes or blocked drains, to the City’s call centre at 0860 543 000 or via email at call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za. Timely reporting can expedite repairs and reduce the risk of accidents or further damage.
