Ekurhuleni
Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety, Sizakele Masuku, has made a compelling call to the metro’s law enforcement. The directive, aimed at the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), emphasises an urgent need to address the troubling incidents of threats against spaza shop owners, increasingly casting a shadow over local businesses.
This call to action follows a concerning visit by Masuku to Thulani Khumalo, a spaza shop proprietor, who has been at the receiving end of life-threatening messages purportedly from competitive traders, allegedly foreign nationals. Khumalo’s predicament underscores a harrowing narrative where he has been ominously warned to shut down his business “or else his life would be in danger,” revealing a chilling tale of intimidation within the community.
Adding to the gravity of the situation is a recent alarming incident where a friend of Khumalo was targeted and shot by unidentified assailants upon leaving his shop, illustrating a startling escalation of violence that is now too close for comfort for the Khumalo family. Reports of mysterious armed individuals seeking Khumalo out at his residence and business premises have further instilled a palpable fear of safety among his family members.
MMC Masuku, in a firm response, condemned these threats, highlighting South Africa’s commitment to the principles of free trade and equal market opportunities for all players, regardless of origin. “We cannot sit back and allow these threats as a municipality. The EMPD must act swiftly and ensure that those behind this are locked up,” Masuku asserted passionately.
In addition to enforcing the law, Masuku reassured the community that measures are in place to safeguard Khumalo and his loved ones during this troubling time. This protective stance not only offers a glimmer of hope to the affected family but also serves as a stern warning to those perpetuating fear and violence among township entrepreneurs.
