The Ekurhuleni Municipality is working to resolve a significant sewer blockage that has led to the closure of an intersection on Ermelo Road, affecting Strubenvale and Casseldale roads in the Springs city centre.
Efforts to Address the Blockage
City spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini, provided an update on the municipality’s efforts to address the situation. He explained that the municipal team initially responded to a sewer spillage and later identified a major blockage, along with several bottlenecks in the sewer network.
“The team is working tirelessly to remove the debris causing the sewage blockage because if not attended to urgently, this can lead to further contamination and health hazards,” Dlamini stated.
Comprehensive Repairs Underway
The municipality’s repair efforts include:
• Ground Level Assessment: Ensuring the sewer system can direct wastewater properly.
• Water Pipe Replacement: Installing new water pipes to improve the system’s efficiency.
• Manhole Replacement: Upgrading damaged and aged manholes to enhance maintenance access and reduce future risks.“The completion time for these repairs is currently unknown, but the municipality is committed to minimising the inconvenience to the public. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes while the repairs are underway to avoid delays and ensure safety in the area,” Dlamini added.
