Sinawo Thambo, Member of Parliament from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has launched a scathing attack on DA Leader and Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen, accusing him of appointing unqualified individuals within his ministry. This comes as the EFF lodges a formal complaint with the Parliamentary Ethics Committee, alleging that Steenhuisen has violated the Code of Ethical Conduct by prioritizing political connections over merit.
Background of the Allegations
The controversy arose after Steenhuisen allegedly responded misleadingly to questions in Parliament. Thambo contends that Steenhuisen appointed four unqualified individuals, bypassing standard recruitment policies. According to the EFF, Steenhuisen sought permission for deviations from the Public Service Act only after these individuals had already begun working, a move seen as a direct violation of ethical guidelines .
Details of the Complaint
In its complaint, the EFF argues that Steenhuisen breached several principles outlined in the Code of Ethical Conduct, including selflessness, integrity, objectivity, openness, and honesty. Thambo specifically calls out the minister for dishonesty, as Steenhuisen initially denied these appointments when questioned in Parliament.
The EFF claims that Steenhuisen’s appointees, which allegedly include DA colleagues Annette Steyn, Una Christians, Charity McCord, and an individual known as Mr. Kruger, lack the required qualifications for their roles. Thambo emphasizes that three of these individuals only possess matric certificates, and the fourth lacks relevant experience .
Involvement of Roman Cabanac
Adding to the controversy is the appointment of Roman Cabanac as Steenhuisen’s Chief of Staff. Cabanac, a right-wing podcaster with a controversial social media presence, was reportedly asked to resign but has yet to do so. The EFF alleges that Steenhuisen was aware of Cabanac’s background prior to the appointment, thus calling into question the minister’s judgment .
Reaction from the EFF and Public Response
The EFF has called for Steenhuisen’s immediate dismissal, citing that his actions not only reflect poor governance but also represent a misuse of public funds. Thambo argues that these appointments serve Steenhuisen’s political agenda rather than the public interest, which contravenes the principles of transparency and accountability expected from public officials .
Steenhuisen’s Response and Implications
While Steenhuisen has denied the accusations, public records indicate he sought deviations from the Public Service Act post-appointment, which the EFF claims shows a disregard for governance standards. Steenhuisen has yet to provide further clarification beyond his initial denial.
This situation underscores the broader political implications and the EFF’s ongoing commitment to holding public officials accountable. Thambo’s statements suggest that the EFF will continue to pressure the government to remove Steenhuisen if he is found guilty by the Ethics Committee.
Public and Political Ramifications
As the debate unfolds, political analysts suggest this incident could have lasting impacts on Steenhuisen’s career and the public’s perception of the current government. The EFF’s complaint not only draws attention to alleged corruption but also highlights a growing demand for transparency in governmental appointments.
