Naledi Chirwa-Mpungose, Member of Parliament and Coordinator of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Youth Command, has been awarded a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Multidisciplinary Human Rights with distinction (Cum Laude) from the University of Pretoria and has now been accepted into a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme at Wits University.

Chirwa-Mpungose announced, via a tweet dated 19 April 2025, that she has received an offer of admission to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Geography, Archaeology, and Environmental Studies at Wits University. The shared academic application screen confirms the acceptance for the 2025 academic year, reinforcing her dedication to continued learning and research.

A Milestone in Academic Excellence

Chirwa-Mpungose’s achievement underscores her commitment to academic excellence and social justice. The MPhil in Multidisciplinary Human Rights is a rigorous two-year postgraduate programme offered by the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria. The programme integrates various disciplines, including law, political science, and social sciences, to provide a comprehensive understanding of human rights issues.

The curriculum comprises coursework modules, a research methodology component, and a mini-dissertation. To graduate with distinction, students must achieve an average of at least 75% across all coursework modules and the mini-dissertation.

EFF’s Commitment to Education

The EFF has lauded Chirwa-Mpungose’s accomplishment, stating: “This achievement reflects the EFF’s ongoing commitment to making education fashionable and empowering through academic excellence.”

Chirwa-Mpungose’s academic success aligns with the EFF’s broader mission to promote education among its members and the youth. Her role as Coordinator of the newly established EFF Youth Command further exemplifies her dedication to youth empowerment and political activism.

A Journey Rooted in Activism

Born on 22 July 1993 in Vosloorus, Gauteng, Chirwa-Mpungose was raised in Mamelodi, Pretoria. She gained national prominence as a student activist during the #FeesMustFall movement, advocating for accessible higher education. Her activism led to her election to the National Assembly in 2019 as the EFF’s youngest MP.

Throughout her political career, Chirwa-Mpungose has been a vocal advocate for social justice, gender equality, and human rights. Her academic pursuits in human rights further reinforce her commitment to these causes.

Balancing Roles: Politician, Activist, Scholar

Chirwa-Mpungose’s ability to balance her responsibilities as a parliamentarian, activist, and scholar is commendable. Her dedication to continuous learning and academic excellence serves as an inspiration to many young South Africans.

In addition to her political and academic roles, Chirwa-Mpungose is a mother of two, highlighting her multifaceted identity and resilience.

Looking Ahead

With her MPhil degree, Chirwa-Mpungose is well-positioned to contribute further to the discourse on human rights and social justice in South Africa. Her academic insights, combined with her political experience, equip her to advocate effectively for policies that promote equality and human dignity.

As South Africa continues to grapple with complex social issues, leaders like Chirwa-Mpungose exemplify the importance of informed and compassionate leadership.
