EFF demands justice in Kroonstad farm murder case involving secret burial after a person was shot and killed by farm owners on 11 July 2025, with the body buried in an unmarked grave, as highlighted in a statement by Free State Provincial Secretary Bosanku Msimanga criticising police reluctance to make arrests.

Shocking Details Emerge from Farm Incident

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Free State has expressed deep shock over a disturbing incident on a farm near Kroonstad, on the way to Welkom, where a person was shot and killed by the farm owners on 11 July 2025. The victim’s body was then secretly buried in an unmarked grave, only to be discovered later by police following a confession from a farm worker who helped dig the grave and bury the corpse. This revelation has sparked outrage, with the EFF calling for immediate arrests and a thorough investigation into what they describe as a heinous crime.
In a strongly worded statement, EFF Free State Provincial Secretary Bosanku Msimanga detailed the events, noting that the farm owner, who is a well-known doctor in Kroonstad, also fired a shot at one of the farm dwellers and missed her. A case has been opened in regard to this attempted murder. Despite the cases being registered, and with identifiable witnesses and suspects, no arrests have been made, which the EFF finds deeply troubling.
Msimanga outlined a clear path for the police investigation, suggesting that the starting point should be to arrest the person who dug the grave as an accomplice. “The point of departure for the investigation would have been to arrest the person who dug the grave as an accomplice. By doing that he would have pointed out who asked him to do that thus revealing the person who defeated the course of justice and the murderer,” he said. Another option proposed is to take the witness to court for a formal confession and use that to effect arrests.
Additionally, Msimanga pointed to the attempted murder case as a straightforward opportunity for action. “The other scenario is to follow the case of the lady who opened an attempted murder charge and effect an arrest on that case alone. If there’s an ongoing investigation on other cases. This one is a straight arrest, because the suspect is pointed out by the victim. The police can arrest and allow the court process. If suspect is given a bail, fair enough because they can always obtain J175 later for the suspect to appear before court,” he explained.

Calls for Transparency and Firearm Checks

The EFF is demanding that the police provide full details on the cases involved. “Police need to indicate how many cases were opened, who the victims are, and who the suspects are. This information can easily indicate what direction the investigation should take. Also the number of firearms the suspect have needs to be checked and confiscated for ballistic testing,” Msimanga stated. This transparency, he argued, is essential to ensure a proper probe and to prevent any cover-ups.
The statement also criticised the Kroonstad police station for what the EFF sees as a pattern of reluctance in arresting white people accused of serious crimes. “Reluctance in arresting white people who committed heinous crimes has become synonymous with Kroonstad police station. There are number of farm killings in Kroonstad in which police have been deliberately negligent in handling cases with care, example is mabizela case where were short multiple times by the white perpetrators the case just vanished into thin air due to poor preparations,” Msimanga said.
This reference to past cases underscores a broader concern about systemic issues in handling farm-related violence in the area. Farm murders and attacks have been a contentious issue in South Africa for years, often highlighting racial tensions and inequalities in rural communities. In the Free State, where agriculture plays a key role in the economy, such incidents can escalate community divisions and raise questions about law enforcement’s impartiality.

Broader Context of Farm Violence in South Africa

South Africa has seen numerous farm attacks and murders over the years, with statistics showing hundreds of incidents annually. While some are linked to robbery or land disputes, others involve deeper social conflicts rooted in the country’s history of apartheid and land ownership disparities. The EFF has consistently advocated for land reform and justice in these cases, arguing that vulnerable farm dwellers often face exploitation and violence without adequate protection.
In similar past incidents, like the Mabizela case mentioned, victims have reported being shot at multiple times, with investigations stalling due to alleged negligence. This pattern has led to calls for independent oversight and better training for police in rural areas. The Free State, with its vast farmlands, has been a hotspot for such crimes, prompting organisations to demand stronger interventions from national government.
The secret burial in this recent case adds a layer of horror, reminiscent of historical injustices where bodies were hidden to evade accountability. The farm worker’s confession was crucial in uncovering the grave, but the EFF questions why this has not led to swift arrests. They believe that delaying action allows evidence to be tampered with and undermines public trust in the justice system.
