Floyd Shivambu
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Deputy President Floyd Shivambu has been awarded a Master of Science degree in International Development by the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London. This achievement was confirmed on Tuesday. The University of London’s SOAS is renowned for its world-class Development Studies program, securing the third spot in the QS World University Rankings for this discipline.
Floyd Shivambu’s latest academic achievement is his second Master’s degree, following a Master of Arts degree in Political Studies from Wits University in 2014. His coursework at SOAS included studying the Political Economy and Sociology of Development, Understanding Poverty, and delving into the Economy, Politics, and Society in East Asia. Shivambu’s research critically examined the economic relationships between the People’s Republic of China and the African continent, questioning whether these interactions could be classified as neocolonialism.
The EFF, under the statement from Elections Spokesperson Sixolise Gilishe, has expressed immense pride in Shivambu’s accomplishment, saying the value it adds to the party’s intellectual foundation. The EFF is confident that Shivambu’s now-demonstrated knowledge will enrich the party’s economic policies and engagements, particularly ahead of their anticipated governance starting from 29th May 2024. This achievement aligns with the EFF’s belief in the importance of continuous education for its leaders, echoing the words of Che Guevara: “The first duty of a revolutionary is to be educated.”
Reacting to his graduation on Social Media X (formerly known as Twitter), Shivambu shared his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to advance his understanding of international development. He expressed honour in joining the ranks of SOAS alumni such as Walter Rodney, a revolutionary Pan Africanist, and Arkebe Okubay, a prominent advocate for industrialization in Africa. Shivambu also mentioned a personal pilgrimage to Highgate Cemetery to visit the grave of Karl Marx, underlining the depth of his intellectual journey.
The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), where Shivambu achieved his latest academic milestone, has a rich history of fostering critical understanding and scholarship on Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Established in 1916, SOAS has evolved into a globally respected institution, engaging in cutting-edge research and offering diverse programs that address the complex challenges faced by these regions. Its commitment to excellence in developing studies and international development has made SOAS a beacon for scholars and leaders aiming to make a difference in the global landscape.
