As the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) prepare for their 3rd National People’s Assembly, set to take place from 12 to 15 December 2024 at the NASREC Expo Centre in Johannesburg, the event promises to be a milestone in the party’s history. Under the theme “Defend, Rebuild and Advance the Struggle for Economic Freedom,” EFF leader Julius Malema has outlined the assembly’s goals, which include leadership elections, constitutional amendments, and the adoption of a new five-year action plan.

Addressing the media, Malema emphasized that the assembly is the party’s highest decision-making body, gathering delegates from across South Africa to debate and set the EFF’s future direction. As the party grows, Malema noted the impressive progress in organizational development, with over 1,100 branches meeting the criteria to send delegates to the assembly .

Structural Reforms and Key Commissions

A significant part of the assembly will focus on structural reforms to improve the party’s organizational capabilities. Proposals include increasing branch membership requirements and transforming the EFF Student Command into a broader Youth Command to unify young people across educational, professional, and social spheres. This reorganization aims to better reflect South Africa’s diverse socio-political landscape and strengthen the EFF’s grassroots influence .

Delegates will participate in 12 commissions, discussing topics such as land reform, gender struggles, media and communications, state capacity, and Pan-Africanism. These commissions are tasked with formulating actionable strategies that align with the EFF’s founding principles, particularly the fight for economic freedom and social justice .

Land Reform and Gender Justice

The EFF remains committed to land reform as a cornerstone of its platform. Malema reiterated the party’s stance on expropriation without compensation, calling for state custodianship of land to address the enduring inequalities of land ownership. The assembly will review legislative proposals aimed at reshaping South Africa’s land policy, moving away from restitution towards a more direct redistribution approach.

On gender justice, the EFF’s perspective links gender inequality to systemic oppression within South Africa’s patriarchal and capitalist systems. The party advocates for legislative reforms to address gender-based violence and promote women’s economic participation, seeking to foster an inclusive, non-sexist society .

Electoral Processes and New Leadership

The assembly will also see the election of new leadership, facilitated by an independent electoral commission. This transparent and orderly process is crucial for maintaining the party’s internal democracy as it transitions to its next phase of leadership. The current leadership’s term will end at the assembly, and new leaders will be tasked with implementing the party’s revised program of action for the coming years.

Malema urged delegates to remain disciplined and vigilant, as the assembly will undoubtedly attract external scrutiny. He called on party members to focus on the EFF’s core mission and resist distractions from “information peddlers and spies” .

As the EFF gears up for its 3rd National People’s Assembly, the event will be a defining moment for the party, setting the stage for future engagements and consolidating its position in South African politics. With a clear emphasis on economic freedom, social justice, and internal strengthening, the EFF aims to continue growing its influence and championing the causes that resonate with its supporters across the nation.
