By Thys Khiba – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) regional chairperson April Motaung has urged the community of Moqhaka Local Municipality to support victims of gender-based violence (GBV) in their area.
“If there is any honour and self-respect left in the ANC then they should immediately dismiss their REC member and councillor Ramajoe,” Motaung said.
Motaung has also advised members of his political party and community to attend the court appearance of the African National Congress (ANC) councillor and Moqhaka Local Municipality MMC Lehlohonolo Ramajoe.
Ramajoe is expected to appear in the Viljoenskroon District Court on 29 January 2024. This comes after he appeared in court for the judgement of his bail application and was denied bail on Wednesday, 20 December 2023.
The 38-year-old councillor is accused of raping a 23-year-old woman.
“As the voice of the voiceless, the EFF will be following and attending these court proceedings.
“This has cast a very dark cloud on the municipality and its leadership as Ramajoe is a member of the Mayoral Committee in Moqhaka Local Municipality,” said Motaung.
The EFF has also criticised ANC for allegedly failing to deal with its members who are in support of Ramajoe.
“If the ANC is serious about uprooting the scourge of GBV they need to start from within their ranks. In December 2023 some members of the ANC that were in support of Ramajoe and his actions, were insulting the members of the ANC Women’s League that were standing up against a monster in society,” said Motaung.
According to the NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane, every person who is suspected to have committed a crime has a right to apply for bail, as enshrined in the constitution and criminal procedure act. Senokoatsane said, the prosecution can oppose such an application if it is not in the best interest of justice.
Meanwhile police are continuing with their investigations in connection with this matter.
