The Economic Freedom Fighters Student Command (EFFSC) has once again demonstrated its growing influence on South African campuses by securing a notable number of seats in the 2024 Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Student Representative Council (SRC) elections. With 9,635 votes, EFFSC claimed three crucial institutional SRC positions, competing head-to-head with their closest rivals, the South African Students Congress (SASCO), which won an almost identical number of seats and votes. This year’s election results mark a significant moment in student politics, as various political factions continue to vie for control of student governance in one of South Africa’s largest universities.
A Tightly Contested Race
The 2024 elections were fiercely contested, with several student organisations, including SASCO, the Student Christian Organisation (SCO), and the South African Democratic Students Movement (SADESMO), fighting for dominance. In the final tally, SASCO also secured three institutional SRC positions, narrowly edging out EFFSC with 9,948 votes. The SCO garnered one seat with 3,457 votes, while SADESMO failed to claim any institutional seats, collecting 2,425 votes.
The competition was even fiercer at the campus level. In Pretoria, EFFSC led with three seats and 4,188 votes, followed closely by SASCO, which garnered three seats and 3,792 votes. MKYL (Umkhonto Wesizwe Youth League) secured two seats with 2,398 votes, reflecting their growing influence in the student political landscape. SADESMO captured one seat with 666 votes.
A Strong Presence Across Multiple Campuses
EFFSC’s influence extended beyond Pretoria, demonstrating significant support across various TUT campuses. At the Emalahleni Campus, EFFSC won three seats with 786 votes, with SASCO, SADESMO, and MKYL securing one seat each with 216, 230, and 336 votes respectively.
At the Polokwane Campus, EFFSC again claimed victory with three seats and 981 votes. However, SASCO remained close behind, winning three seats and 878 votes, followed by SCO and MKYL with 245 and 192 votes respectively.
The Ga-Rankuwa Campus saw a more evenly distributed result. Here, EFFSC secured two seats with 792 votes, while SASCO led with two seats and 837 votes. MKYL followed with 823 votes and two seats, with SADESMO trailing with 517 votes.
Soshanguve Campus proved to be a challenging battleground for EFFSC, where they secured two seats with 1,743 votes. SASCO dominated this campus with three seats and 2,940 votes, followed by MKYL with 2,740 votes and SCO with 1,187 votes.
Meanwhile, the Mbombela Campus saw a relatively lower turnout, with EFFSC winning two seats with 507 votes. SASCO led the charge with three seats and 774 votes, followed by MKYL and SCO with 389 and 330 votes respectively.
