EFF Pushes for Unity and Commitment to the Freedom Charter Amidst GNU Talks

Johannesburg – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have made it clear that they are prepared to co-govern with the African National Congress (ANC), urging the ruling party to reject the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) in the ongoing Government of National Unity (GNU) discussions. This follows a recent meeting on Friday where the EFF emphasised the importance of unity and steadfast adherence to the principles of the Freedom Charter, which addresses the historic mission of liberation.

EFF’s Proposal for Co-Governance

The ANC had initially reached an agreement in principle with nine other parties to form the current GNU. However, the EFF’s latest demands, articulated in a statement sent to the ANC on Saturday, come at a critical juncture as President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce the new cabinet lineup, with the EFF poised to be excluded for not joining the existing GNU.

In the letter addressed to ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, EFF Secretary General Marshall Dlamini outlined the party’s conditions for co-governing with the ANC, stressing their commitment to the Freedom Charter and the need to maintain the liberation struggle’s objectives. The EFF highlighted past collaborations with the ANC in provincial and regional governments as evidence of their capability to bring stability and effective service delivery.

Key Points from EFF’s Statement

  1. Commitment to Liberation: The EFF acknowledges the ANC’s vital role in the liberation struggle and its dedication to building a non-racial, non-sexist, and democratic society.
  2. Rejection of DA and FF Plus: The EFF firmly opposes any collaboration with the DA and FF Plus, citing their “imperialist, counter-revolutionary, white supremacist agenda” and opposition to progressive internationalism and economic transformation initiatives.
  3. Proposed Agreement: The EFF suggests a new agreement or Statement of Intent with the ANC, excluding other GNU partners, focusing on principles of liberation, redress, and equality.
  4. Assurance of Non-Collaboration with DA: The EFF guarantees it will not cooperate with the DA in any government sphere and supports an ANC-led government.
  5. Government Participation: The EFF seeks representation in all clusters of national government and leadership positions in legislatures.
  6. Background on GNU Talks
  7. The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has also called for swift action from the ANC and DA to finalise the GNU negotiations. IFP President Velenkosini Hlabisa expressed concerns over the delays, urging the parties to expedite the process.
  8. The negotiations between ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa and DA leader John Steenhuisen have been contentious, with Ramaphosa criticising the DA for shifting demands, particularly regarding the number of cabinet portfolios. Steenhuisen insists on proportional representation, reflecting electoral outcomes, leading to friction over key portfolios such as Trade, Industry, and Competition.
  9. Upcoming Announcements
  10. President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to announce the new national executive soon, with speculation about whether the DA will secure the strategic portfolios it has targeted, including Home Affairs, Communications and Digital Technologies, and Trade, Industry, and Competition.
  11. Additionally, Ramaphosa will address the opening session of Parliament on 18 July 2024, a crucial event that will outline the priorities of the 7th Administration.
