Fana Mokoena, a prominent member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and internationally acclaimed actor, has once again resigned from his position in Parliament. Mokoena, who was sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) just four months ago, submitted his resignation earlier this week, marking his second departure from South Africa’s legislative body.
Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo confirmed the resignation on Thursday, stating, “We can confirm that the Speaker is in receipt of a letter of resignation from Mr Mokoena.” Despite several attempts, Mokoena was unavailable for comment regarding his departure.
A History of Political Engagement and EFF Representation
Fana Mokoena initially entered Parliament in May 2014 as an EFF representative, where he served in the National Council of Provinces. His commitment to the party and its vision for economic transformation saw him transition to the National Assembly in August 2016. Mokoena held his parliamentary seat until October 2020, when he first resigned from his position.
His return to Parliament in June 2024 was welcomed by EFF supporters, following the general elections held on May 29. During his brief tenure this year, Mokoena was an active participant on two significant portfolio committees: Sport, Arts and Culture, and Trade, Industry and Competition. His involvement in these committees aligned with his background as an actor and advocate for the arts, as well as his interest in South Africa’s economic policies.
Reasons for Resignation Remain Unclear
Although the specific reasons behind Mokoena’s resignation have not been officially disclosed, his departure follows a period of noticeable turnover within the EFF’s parliamentary caucus. His resignation came just a day before former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane also submitted her resignation. Sources within Parliament suggest that Mokoena’s exit was finalized earlier this week, yet the motivations behind his decision remain a topic of speculation among political analysts and party members alike.
Some observers have linked Mokoena’s resignation to potential internal dynamics within the EFF or a possible refocus on his career in the arts. Mokoena, known for his roles in notable South African films, has often balanced his political commitments with his acting career. However, without an official statement, the true motivations behind his departure are yet to be confirmed.
Mokoena’s Impact on EFF and Parliament
During his time as an MP, Fana Mokoena became known for his articulate and impassioned speeches. His contributions to parliamentary debates were often marked by his advocacy for social justice and economic equality. Mokoena’s role on the Sport, Arts and Culture portfolio committee also allowed him to champion issues related to the creative industries, which have historically struggled for adequate representation and funding in South Africa.
The EFF, known for its revolutionary stance on economic policies and its vocal opposition to established political structures, benefited from Mokoena’s celebrity status and public speaking skills. As of yet, the EFF leadership has not issued a formal statement regarding Mokoena’s resignation. However, it is anticipated that the party will address his departure in the coming days. Mokoena’s exit could potentially prompt discussions within the party about succession planning and the EFF’s strategy going forward, particularly as the party prepares for future elections and continues to advocate for radical economic transformation.
