The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Free State are leading a picket outside the office of Free State Premier Maqueen Letsoha-Mathae in Bloemfontein’s Mangaung district. The protest seeks her immediate removal following allegations of corruption linked to a botched tender deal involving businessman Patrick Phuti.

Phuti claims that Premier Letsoha-Mathae abandoned him after a tender deal reportedly soured. He also alleges that her husband, Lawrence Mathae, played a role in questionable dealings surrounding the contract, prompting a formal investigation by the Hawks, South Africa’s elite crime-fighting unit. The EFF, which became the first political party to formally open a case in this matter, has demanded a full inquiry and accountability for all involved.

In addition to their corruption allegations, the EFF’s march expresses solidarity with more than 1,300 healthcare workers, including nursing assistants and COVID-19 support staff, who reportedly had their contracts terminated under Letsoha-Mathae’s administration. Many of these workers were essential during the pandemic and are now without employment, a decision the EFF argues further underscores the premier’s lack of commitment to the province’s well-being.

This is a developing story
