EFF Gauteng to Lead March and Open Case Against Operation Dudula for Blocking Jabavu Clinic Access in Soweto, as the party condemns the violation of constitutional rights of eight South African citizens prevented from healthcare services last week, scheduling a protest at Moroka Police Station on Saturday to demand accountability and ensure no community is denied access based on unlawful obstruction or intimidation.
This decisive action by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng highlights escalating tensions between anti-immigrant vigilante groups like Operation Dudula and advocates for equal rights, amid a national debate on xenophobia, afrophobia, and access to public services in South Africa. On Friday, 19 September 2025, the EFF issued a media release announcing that Provincial Chairperson Nkululeko Dunga will lead a march to Moroka Police Station in Soweto on Saturday, 20 September 2025, to formally open a case against Operation Dudula and its president Zandile Dabula. The protest, starting at 10:00 AM, stems from an incident last week where eight South African citizens were allegedly barred from entering Jabavu Clinic by Dudula members, infringing on their constitutional right to healthcare. “The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng stands firmly alongside eight(8) South African citizens whose constitutional rights were violated last week when they were unjustly prevented from accessing Jabavu Clinic by leaders and members of Operation Dudula, including Zandile Dabula,” the statement read. The EFF reiterated its commitment to defending the rights and freedoms of all South Africans, declaring: “No community, no individual, must be denied access to any part of our country on the basis of unlawful obstruction or intimidation.” As the march is set to take place today, Saturday, EFF supporters and community members are expected to gather in solidarity for justice, equality, and constitutional rights, positioning the party as a staunch defender against divisive tactics.
The EFF’s initiative is a direct response to what they describe as a “serious infringement” on constitutional rights, calling on progressive forces, community members, and activists to join the march. The statement, signed by Commissar Nkululeko Dunga and Communications Officer Fighter Dumisani Baleni, details the march’s logistics: Date – 20th September 2025 (Saturday), Time – 10:00 AM, Location – Moroka Police Station, Soweto. “In response to this serious infringement, the leadership of the EFF will lead a march to Moroka Police Station. This action is aimed at opening a case demanding accountability, the protection of the rights enshrined in the Constitution, and ensuring that such violations are never repeated,” the release stated. This move aligns with the EFF’s pan-African ideology and their consistent opposition to Operation Dudula, which they view as promoting afrophobia and division among black Africans.
Operation Dudula, founded in 2021 by Nhlanhla “Lux” Dlamini, positions itself as a community protection movement targeting undocumented immigrants in jobs, housing, and public services. However, critics, including the EFF, label it a xenophobic outfit that unlawfully obstructs access to essential facilities. The Jabavu Clinic incident last week involved Dudula members allegedly blocking entry to individuals they perceived as foreigners, but in the process, denying service to South African citizens. This echoes a similar event in August 2025 at Lillian Ngoyi Community Health Centre in Johannesburg, where Dudula protested against immigrants accessing healthcare, leading to the arrest of three women aged 49 to 60 on charges of intimidation and assault. The women were released on R1,000 bail each after appearing in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on 11 August 2025. Dudula members protested outside the court, demanding stricter immigration enforcement.
EFF President Julius Malema has repeatedly condemned Dudula as a “group of thugs,” accusing them of fueling xenophobia. In a 2022 statement, Malema described Dudula as a “group of thugs which should be brought to the political killings task.” The party’s actions today build on this stance, with videos from previous Dudula clinic blockades showing members chanting against foreigners and physically barring entrances. The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ)’s July 2025 report documented Dudula’s role in xenophobic violence since 2021, calling for prosecutions. Zandile Dabula, Dudula’s president, has defended their actions as protecting South Africans’ rights, but the EFF argues they violate Section 27 of the Constitution, which guarantees healthcare access for all.
