EFF DSG Poppy Mailola Says Sex Work is a Legitimate Work

Sex work is a topic that has always been surrounded by controversy and stigma.

However, Deputy Secretary General of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Poppy Mailola, made a bold statement by acknowledging sex work as a legitimate profession.

In her keynote address at the EFF Basadi Barriers of Life Dialogue in Johannesburg, Mailola emphasized the need to challenge societal stigmas and provide support and protection for those engaged in this profession.

One of the key issues that Mailola highlighted was the criminalization of sex work under the Sexual Offences Act of 1957. This not only makes it difficult for sex workers to operate legally but also compromises their safety.

“By recognizing sex work as legitimate work, we can create an environment that empowers women and ensures their safety and well-being.” said Mailola

During the dialogue, the EFF commemorated women’s month and reflected on the progress made in the fight for gender equality.

Mailola emphasized that while progress has been made, there is still much work to be done. She addressed the issue of domestic violence, stating that no woman should live in fear or endure violence behind closed doors. “It is crucial to raise our voice against this injustice and work towards creating safe spaces for all women.”

Inclusivity is a fundamental principle that should guide efforts towards gender equality, according to Mailola.

She stressed the importance of including all women in society, regardless of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background. “By embracing diversity and promoting inclusivity, we can create a more just and equitable world for all.”

“Gender discrimination remains a significant barrier to progress, with women experiencing unequal treatment in various aspects of life, including employment opportunities, education, and decision-making processes”.

Mailola highlighted the need to challenge discriminatory practices and advocate for equal rights and opportunities for all genders.

Additionally, Mailola emphasized the importance of protecting children from all forms of abuse and providing them with a nurturing environment where they can thrive. “By investing in their well-being, we are investing in the future of our society.”

Lastly, Mailola addressed the issue of poverty, particularly affecting senior mothers and marginalized communities. “It is essential to address the root causes of poverty and work towards economic empowerment for all women”.
