EFF on IEC Commissioner Nomsa Masuku
By Mpho Moloi
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have called for the resignation of Nomsa Masuku from her position as Commissioner of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). This follows her arrest by the Hawks for an alleged R1.2 million fraud related to student scholarships during her tenure at Standard Bank’s Adopt A School Trust.

EFF’s Standpoint on the Issue
In a “statement” released by EFF spokesperson Leigh-Ann Mathys, the party emphasised its concern about the integrity of democratic institutions in South Africa. Mathys stated:
“The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has taken note of the recent charges against the IEC Commissioner and former Standard Bank employee, Nomsa Masuku. According to reports, Masuku was arrested on Friday morning by the Hawks for allegedly committing R1.2 million in fraud related to student scholarships and bursaries.”
Mathys elaborated that the charges against Masuku stem from her time as the head of the Adopt A School Trust. Hawks investigators found that Masuku allegedly manipulated the processes of the trust, awarding scholarships to friends and family members without committee approval, and reportedly diverting some funds directly into her personal bank account.
Public Trust and Integrity at Stake
The EFF has expressed concerns over the influence such allegations could have on the credibility of the IEC, especially after recent elections. Mathys pointed out that:
“This accusation comes at a highly sensitive time, following the recent elections where there have been significant public concerns about the fairness and integrity of the electoral process. Such allegations cast a shadow over the IEC and further erode public trust in our democratic institutions.”
Furthermore, the EFF questioned whether these allegations were known during Masuku’s appointment as IEC Commissioner. They argue that if such oversight occurred, it would signify a grave failure in the parliamentary vetting process.
Call for Immediate Resignation
The EFF insists that for the good of the democratic processes, Masuku should step down from her position. Mathys highlighted:
“To preserve the integrity of the IEC and ensure public confidence in our democratic processes, the EFF expected Masuku to have already resigned from her position. If Masuku were truly committed to the constitution and the principles of democracy she professes to uphold as a Commissioner, she would step down.”
Mathys adds that her resignation would allow Masuku to address these serious allegations personally, without further tarnishing the IEC’s reputation.
Court Proceedings and Future Developments
Nomsa Masuku appeared in the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court in Johannesburg and was granted R20,000 bail. The court has postponed her case to 4 September 2024. Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale detailed the accusations:
“Through an intensive probe, the Hawks investigators established that the incumbent flaunted the processes of the trust by awarding scholarships to friends and family members through manipulation of documents and without the approval of the committee, with some of the monies deposited directly into her personal bank account to the tune of R1.2 million.”
The allegations have put the IEC under intense scrutiny. Responding to the developments, the IEC issued a “statement” noting:
“Electoral Commission responds to the matter of the reported arrest of Commissioner Dr Nomsa Masuku. The Electoral Commission is aware of the reported arrest of Commissioner Dr Nomsa Masuku. It appears that the matter relates to her erstwhile employment and does not relate to her tenure in the Commission both as an employee and commissioner. The Commission will monitor developments in the matter.”
