On Wednesday, July 26th, 2023, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) will commemorate its birthday at Marikana in North West. Officially launched on the same date in 2013, the party attributes its inception to the Marikana massacre, positioning itself as the only champion for the poor.
EFF’s leader, Julius Malema, took to Twitter to extend his birthday wishes, stating, “Happy 10th Birthday To The 26 July Movement! Today, we mark the actual birthday of @EFFSouthAfrica at Marikana through traditional celebrations. As a symbolic gesture, we have sacrificed 10 cows and brewed traditional beer (Umqobothi).”
Malema emphasized their presence in Marikana to express gratitude to the originator of EFF’s existence and humbly seek forgiveness for any past mistakes or shameful acts. He acknowledged the blessings already received from the departed and invoked a traditional phrase, saying, “Re tlo latša Badimo.”

The EFF has been hosting various celebrations nationwide as part of their 10th-anniversary festivities. The main rally will take place at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, July 29th, 2023, followed by a gala dinner at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on July 27th.
In a stern message, Julius Malema cautioned party representatives about insufficient attendance and sales to the gala dinner, threatening to ban them from participating in the 10th birthday celebrations. The party expects representatives from nine provinces to fill a staggering 3,258 buses.
Ticket packages for the gala dinner range from the exclusive platinum package, which is sold out and offers 10 seats at the main table alongside Malema, to the bronze package priced at R250,000.
