The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Fezile Dabi region has called for the immediate removal of the African National Congress (ANC) member and Moqhaka Local Municipality MMC, Lehlohonolo Ramajoe over rape allegations that he is facing.

Ramajoe briefly appeared in the Viljoenskroon Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 04 December on rape charges. On the day of his court appearance, he did not plead on the charges (sexual offence).

The matter has been postponed to Monday,11 December 2023 and the suspect is still in custody.

The red berets have accused him of deliberately using his position to take advantage of a 22-year-old girl who allegedly asked for help from community leader.

On Monday, the EFF regional chairperson April Motaung has urged law enforcement agencies to speed up all outstanding cases of Gender-Based Violence, rape and femicide, “as people have lost all hope in the legal-justice system.”

“This heinous and despicable act happened in the early hours of Monday the 4th of December 2023 near a farm in Viljoenskroon. We are reliably informed that the disgraced councillor took advantage of a young lady in distress who asked for help from the councillor to go home as it was someone she knew.

“In typical bandit style, Ramajoe took her near Oorskit farm and raped the young lady,” said Motaung.

The party added that the alleged incident takes place while the world is still observing the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children.

“A 37 year old male, appeared before the Viljoenskroon Magistrate Court on Monday, 4 December 2023 after raping 22 year old victim,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani.

In response to our questions, ANC regional spokesperson Sello Pietersen said the party has started with the relevant internal processes that deals with the alleged offence.

“The Regional leadership is in constant interaction with the Political Leadership of our caucus in the Municipality to monitor the developments around this matter.

“The internal processes of the organisation necessary when dealing with issues of such seriousness have been initiated,” said Pietersen.
