EFF Free State
QWAQWA –The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Free State have announced they will stage a protest by boycotting Premier Mxolisi Dukwana’s State of the Province Address (SOPA) today, Thursday the 29th of February 2024. The decision comes amidst allegations of government incompetence and corruption
The event, which will take place in Qwaqwa, will see Premier Mxolisi Dukwana presenting his government’s achievements and outlining future plans under the theme, “**Growing the Free State together – making your future work better**.”
However, the EFF has voiced sharp criticism, describing the SOPA as a “**ceremonial and money-siphoning event**.” They argue that the provincial government has consistently failed to address the pressing needs of the people.
The party said in a statement, “**The Provincial Legislature has failed to fulfill its oversight role over the executive and has been used as to rubberstamp the incompetence and deliberate failures of the ANC-Led government**.” They accuse the outgoing Premier, Mr Dukwana, of corruption and mishandling the Department of Human Settlements during his tenure as MEC.
An EFF statement highlighted the gravity of these allegations: “**Dukwana and his corrupt government have disregarded the plight of housing and human settlements in the province**.” The party pointed out that a significant sum of funding meant for housing projects was returned to the National Treasury, while many in the province remain homeless. They also referenced the ongoing legal issues involving senior managers implicated in the Asbestos case who have returned to work without facing internal disciplinary actions.
Addressing the general state of local governance, the EFF did not mince words: “**The state of municipalities has worsened under the rule of the ANC and Dukwana. Municipalities are not financially solvent and liquid, there is no service delivery happening**.” They cited several municipalities with severe infrastructure and service delivery problems.
In response to what they view as an impending sham, the EFF stated, “**It should be noted that the EFF is exercising its constitutional right by protesting this event**.” They urge the people of the Free State to reject the SOPA’s “**electioneering campaign**” and demand action rather than promises.
Dr. Roy Jankielsohn, leader of the Official Opposition party DA, echoed the need for actionable promises in the upcoming SOPA. “Premier Mxolisi Dukwana will deliver his second State of the Province Address (SOPA) tomorrow since being appointed Premier in 2023. And for the second time, we expect to hear more political rhetoric and empty promises,” said Dr. Jankielsohn.
The DA leader called on Premier Dukwana to address pressing concerns such as the poor road network, youth unemployment, decaying healthcare facilities, and the ongoing electricity crisis that affects economic sectors across the Free State.
“The people of the Free State deserve a capable government that is able to provide practical solutions to the problems we face,” Dr. Jankielsohn concluded, drawing attention to the DA’s ‘Ready to Govern plan’ intended to unlock the economic potential of the province.
