EDITORIAL| Kaizer Chiefs Breaks My Heart

The South Africa Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced that it has been denied the opportunity to broadcast the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League final between the South African Kaizer Chiefs and Egyptian Al Ahly to Chiefs supporters and football lovers in South Africa.

By Thys Khiba – You have recently surprised and shocked many of your supporters by announcing the appointment of Molefi Ntseki as the new head coach for Kaizer Chiefs first team.

In the same media statement released on 28 June 2023, you have indicated that Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard will return as assistant coaches.

Why did you hire Ntseki as the head coach and keep Zwane as his assistant coach if he [Zwane] failed to deliver as the head coach?

Keeping Zwane as part of the first team coaching department and technical team indicates that you are or were not willing to let go of him. It is clear that you were influenced by the noise pollution of your impatient and frustrated supporters.

Therefore this clearly shows that you are a reactive leader who has no plan for Kaizer Chiefs.

Maybe you have a different plan but it does not make sense to fire Zwane and keep him as a coach again. This is nonsense and nonsense, Bataung le Motaung. It does not make sense at least to someone who would believe that Zwane was removed from the position because he failed to deliver.

Is this how you manage the issue of Bobby Motaung’s alleged lack of leadership, controversial image and business-know how? You replace and keep him at the same time. You want to fire him but at the same time you want to keep him as part of the senior management.

Kaizer Chiefs is a team that I love, appreciate and value for many reasons that I cannot mention all of them in this piece. It has a credible history, extraordinary winning records, achievements and professionalism. Amakhosi is a big team that deserves big and progressive coaches like Pitso Mosimane.

What was established and formed on 7 January 1970 at 8414 Sentsho Street in Phefeni, Orlando West Soweto is now more like a political party that is led by clueless politicians and has reached its expiring date.

I refuse to link my disappointment on Chiefs aka Phefeni Glamorous Boys to the current celebrity players who wear the Naturena jersey with no pride, determination and respect.

They will never understand why the likes of Doctor 16V’Khumalo, Nelson ‘Teenage’ Dladla, Patrick ‘Ace’ Ntsoelengoe, Marks Maponyane, Donald ‘Ace Khuse, Thabo ‘Tsiki Tsiki’Mooki, Arthur ‘10111’ Zwane, Fabian McCarthy, Jabu Pule[Mahlangu] and other legends are still honoured and respected to this day. They respected and understood the importance of wearing a Kaizer Chiefs jersey.

To this day, the club is still struggling to a suitable player for jersey number 15 of Chairman Kaizer Motaung and Doctor Khumalo. None of the current players that you have signed want to be considered as one of the true greats of Mzansi football with the most precocious skills. They are not willing to fight like 16Vand Pollen Ndlanya.

But my biggest concern is within the management that appears to be clueless about the business of football and that seems like they are not willing to adjust to the current environment of football. What could have been the drive behind appointing Ntseki who has been with the club for two years only?

Before you misinterpret my views, I respect Ntseki as a professional coach but his experience as the Club’s Head of Technical and Youth Development won’t bring the glorious days of Phefeni boys. His achievements as Head Coach of Bafana Bafana should have guided you to not appoint him now.

Bringing former goalkeeper coach Rainer Dinkelacker back as a Strategic Adviser in the goalkeeping department is a good move but it won’t deal with our struggling striking department. We need strikers and attacking players who are willing to score more goals than to be scored more goals.

Money is and should not be a concern for Chiefs, especially if the football manager understands the importance of buying quality players who will make money for the club and be an investment.
