Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has commended law enforcement agencies for apprehending the last suspect linked to the Lusikisiki massacre, a tragic event that claimed 18 lives in Ngobozana village last year.

The final suspect, a 20-year-old man, was arrested in Qonce while en route to Cape Town. This arrest follows the earlier capture of seven other suspects, including an individual already serving a life sentence for murder and robbery, who is believed to have orchestrated the massacre from prison.

Premier Mabuyane expressed his gratitude, stating, “I want to appreciate the work done by our law enforcement agencies, for their tireless effort in bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensure that justice prevails.”

The massacre, which occurred on 28 September 2024, involved the brutal killing of 18 family members at two homes in Ngobozana village. The victims included 15 women, two men, and a 14-year-old boy. The assailants used firearms, including an AK-47 assault rifle, to carry out the killings.

The suspects face multiple charges, including 18 counts of murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The trial is set to commence in the Lusikisiki Regional Court from 17 to 28 February 2025. One of the accused, Mzukisi Ndamase, who is alleged to have orchestrated the massacre from within prison, has elected to conduct his own defense.

The community of Ngobozana village has been deeply affected by the tragedy, with many residents expressing relief at the arrests and anticipation for the forthcoming trial. Local leaders have called for justice to be served and for measures to be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
