Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane has called for stricter measures against reckless drivers, emphasizing the urgent need to address the rising number of fatalities on the province’s roads. With the festive season in full swing, the premier expressed deep concern over the alarming increase in road deaths, urging law enforcement to hold negligent drivers accountable for their disregard for human life.

The province has reported nearly 90 road fatalities in recent weeks, a grim figure that is expected to rise as last-minute Christmas travellers take to the roads on Tuesday. Mabuyane’s plea comes amidst heightened concerns over road safety, with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) also expressing alarm at the mounting death toll in the Eastern Cape.

In a statement, Mabuyane’s spokesperson, Khusela Rantjie, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting the tragic loss of innocent lives in recent accidents. “The alarming increase in road accidents is claiming innocent lives. In the past week alone, the province witnessed several fatal road crashes. The premier calls on all road users to exercise caution, be vigilant, and adhere to traffic laws to prevent more deaths,” Rantjie said.

The Eastern Cape remains one of the provinces most affected by road fatalities during the festive season, with the New Year’s travel rush likely to exacerbate the situation. Mabuyane emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility and called for swift action to curb further loss of life.
