Eastern Cape Mourns 17 Lives Lost in Van Reenen’s Pass Tragedy

Eastern Cape Mourns

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of 17 lives in a devastating accident on Van Reenen’s Pass. Earlier this week, a minibus taxi travelling from Qumbu, Eastern Cape, collided with a truck in KwaZulu-Natal, leaving only one survivor who is currently receiving medical care.

Provincial transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, highlighted the widespread grief affecting families in the Eastern Cape. “The devastation this period has caused to a lot of families across the Eastern Cape is beyond measure, not just on crashes that have happened in our province, but even those that have happened beyond our borders, as illustrated by this recent accident on the N3 in KZN,” Binqose stated.

The ill-fated journey began in Qumbu, with the minibus taxi carrying 18 passengers en route to Johannesburg. The collision on Van Reenen’s Pass resulted in 17 fatalities, leaving a single survivor who is currently hospitalised.

In the wake of the tragedy, the owner of the minibus taxi has arranged for family members to travel to Ladysmith to identify their loved ones.

Recent Accidents on Van Reenen’s Pass

Van Reenen’s Pass, a critical section of the N3 highway connecting KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, has been the site of multiple accidents in recent times. On 19 December 2024, a multi-vehicle pile-up led to the closure of the pass, causing significant traffic disruptions. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in that incident.

Earlier, on 23 December 2023, a horrific crash involving three minibuses, three sedans, and a truck resulted in seven fatalities at Van Reenen’s Pass near the police station.

Authorities Urge Caution

In light of these tragic events, authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution when navigating Van Reenen’s Pass. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has reiterated its commitment to cracking down on reckless driving and ensuring road safety, especially during peak travel periods.

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport continues to support the affected families during this difficult time and is collaborating with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the accident.

Support for Bereaved Families

The loss of 17 lives has had a profound impact on the Eastern Cape community. Support structures, including counselling services, are being mobilised to assist the grieving families. Community leaders and local organisations have also extended their condolences and are offering assistance where possible.

Investigation Underway

An investigation into the exact cause of the collision is currently underway. Preliminary reports suggest that factors such as road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and driver behaviour will be examined to determine the circumstances leading to the tragic event.

Road Safety Measures

In response to the recent spate of accidents, both the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal Departments of Transport are reviewing current road safety measures on major routes, including Van Reenen’s Pass. Enhanced law enforcement presence, stricter vehicle inspections, and public awareness campaigns are among the strategies being considered to improve safety for all road users.

Community Vigil

A community vigil is being organised in Qumbu to honour the memory of the 17 individuals who lost their lives. The vigil aims to provide a space for collective mourning and to offer support to the bereaved families.
