Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS)

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is investigating a recent incident of fish deaths at Nandoni Dam in Limpopo. The department was alerted to dead fish floating in the dam on Thursday evening, 19 December 2024, and has since dispatched teams to collect water samples from various sites around the affected area for analysis to determine the cause of the fish kill.
In the meantime, residents are cautioned against collecting or consuming the dead fish until investigations are concluded. The public is also advised to avoid swimming in Nandoni Dam or drinking its water, as it is raw, untreated, and not suitable for human consumption. A detailed statement will be issued once the investigation has been completed.
Nandoni Dam, located on the Luvuvhu River near Thohoyandou, serves primarily for water supply and has a history of ecological concerns. In 2009, there were reports of fish and crocodile deaths in the dam, with initial suspicions pointing towards poisoning. However, subsequent tests indicated that there was no poison present in the dam at that time.
Additionally, studies have highlighted the negative impact of extensive netting practices on fish populations in Nandoni Dam. Unregulated netting has led to decreases in the average size and number of fish, raising concerns about the sustainability of fish as a food source for local communities.
