Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana
Free State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana is set to lead the signing ceremony of a Distribution Agency Agreement (DAA) between Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality (MAP) and Eskom. The ceremony, taking place on Tuesday, 07 May 2024, promises to herald a new era in addressing the persistent electricity woes of the MAP area.
Setjhaba Maphalla, the acting Head of Communication, announced that the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, Paul Mashatile, alongside Premier Mxolisi Dukwana, will guide the historic event. The ceremony will also be graced by the presence of the Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Nomasonto Motaung, highlighting the importance of the agreement to the national government.
The implementation of the DAA, coupled with the establishment of the Project Management Unit, is a monumental step towards reinstating essential electricity infrastructure within Maluti-a-Phofung. Additionally, it will provide a structured revenue collection service for the Municipality, setting a national precedent in handling Eskom debts and municipal responses.
Premier Dukwana emphasised the significance of the agreement, attributing its success to the unwavering commitment and collaborative effort of multiple stakeholders, including the Office of the Deputy President, National CoGTA, SALGA, Labour Unions, among others. “This is a testament to the incredible strides we’ve made towards building a democratic and prosperous society, and it mirrors our dedication to ensuring our people have access to basic services and opportunities for economic growth,” Dukwana remarked, reflecting on the progress in the wake of celebrating 30 years of democracy.
Echoing Dukwana’s sentiments, ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa, during the ANC Free State Soyanqoba rally, outlined the government’s efforts in tackling the historic challenges of electricity supply and the staggering debt owed by the Maluti-a-Phofung municipality to Eskom. With an outstanding debt amounting to somewhere around R5 billion, the ANC-led government prioritises restoring functionality and accountability within the municipality.
Ramaphosa assured residents of Phuthaditjhaba, “The electricity issue and the financial burdens borne by the municipality as a result of past governance failures and corruption are matters we are addressing head-on. We are committed to setting things right, ensuring our community understands the importance of their role and the significant strides we are making towards improvement.”
