Mxolisi Dukwana, Free State Premier

The Premier of the Free State, Mxolisi Dukwana, has taken a step in leading a march against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) in Bloemfontein on Wednesday.

Hundreds of people gathered to support the cause, emphasizing the urgent need to address the pervasive issue of violence against women and children.

Premier Dukwana, along with his Executive Council, spoke passionately about the need to confront this issue with all their might.

“We must work toward building a crime-free society that is caring and loving. The construction of such a society will require us to mobilize communities and align our collective efforts and actions toward its realization. The society we envisage should be one where all live in peace and harmony. GBVF is an attack on the values that we espouse, and we must confront it with all our might,” said Premier Dukwana.

He further added, “Many of our women and children are tortured and brutally killed at the hands of their loved ones and criminal networks who masquerade as loving and law-abiding citizens. Therefore, it is incumbent on each and every one of us to play an active role in exposing and isolating these barbarians. Today, we are reminded of 28-year-old Relebogile Phelma and 16-year-old Machaka Radebe who were brutally and senselessly murdered. We also lift the families of Lesego Mamello Motaung and Lerato Masiu who are still missing.”

“It is unfortunate that we gather here not to celebrate accomplishments, but to address an issue that plagues our society and undermines the very fabric of our community. Gender-based violence has proven to be a scourge that knows no boundaries and has taken root in our midst. And I believe it is our collective duty to confront it head-on.”

The Premier went on to highlight the grave concern of kidnapping and killing of women within the province. He emphasized that this heinous and senseless violence has shaken the very foundations of their community, and as government, they feel a deep sense of responsibility to address this scourge head-on.

The Premier’s address did not end with just words, as he outlined tangible steps to combat GBVF. First and foremost, he emphasized the need to strengthen the law enforcement and judicial system to ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts face the full force of the law. Additionally, he pointed out the importance of investing in community policing initiatives and fostering a relationship of trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Furthermore, Premier Dukwana stressed the importance of education as a powerful tool in the fight against violence. He announced plans to implement comprehensive awareness campaigns in schools, workplaces, and communities to educate people about the importance of respect, consent, and the inherent dignity of every individual.

The Premier made it clear that eradicating gender-based violence requires a collective effort. It is not just a government responsibility; it is a societal imperative. Each individual must be a beacon of change, rejecting the normalization of violence and actively working towards a future where every person, regardless of gender, can live free from fear.
