On 26 December 2024, a FlySafair flight from Durban to Cape Town was disrupted by an incident involving a female passenger, later identified as an employee of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). The woman, reportedly intoxicated, became aggressive after being denied further alcohol by the flight crew. Her actions, including physical altercations and racist remarks, have drawn widespread condemnation, notably from the African National Congress (ANC).

Incident Details

A video capturing the event has circulated widely on social media, showing the woman demanding more alcohol. Upon refusal, she exhibited disruptive behaviour, including:

Physical Aggression: Throwing a drink in a flight attendant’s face and pushing another crew member.

Racist Remarks: Using derogatory language towards the crew.

Entitlement Claims: Shouting, “You don’t know who my father is,” implying influence or status.

The crew’s attempts to restrain her were met with resistance, escalating the situation further.

FlySafair’s Response

In light of the incident, FlySafair has added the individual to its no-fly list, enforcing a ban on future travel with the airline. This action underscores the airline’s commitment to passenger and crew safety, as well as maintaining order during flights.

SABC’s Official Statement

The SABC has expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing its core values of respect and integrity. In a public statement, the broadcaster clarified that while the staff member mentioned the SABC during the altercation, editorial decisions are made independently within the newsroom and are not influenced by non-editorial staff. The SABC has initiated internal procedures to address the employee’s conduct, reaffirming its commitment to upholding professional standards.

ANC’s Condemnation

The ANC has publicly denounced the woman’s behaviour, especially her invocation of the party’s name during the incident. Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri, the ANC’s Head of Communications and National Spokesperson, stated:

“The African National Congress (ANC) has noted with disgust and disdain the behaviour of a woman aboard a domestic flight who acted in an unruly and unbecoming manner, while invoking the name of the ANC as if to justify her actions.”

The party has initiated an investigation into her membership status, asserting that such conduct is inexcusable and does not reflect the ANC’s values. The ANC calls on all South Africans to act responsibly and promote unity and respect.
