Dr. Sifiso Maseko has resigned from his position as Secretary-General of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party. In a letter dated 29 October 2024, addressed to former President Jacob Zuma, the leader of the MK Party, Dr. Maseko announced his decision to vacate the position effective 4 November 2024. He cited his return to his full-time role as Chief Director of Infrastructure at the Gauteng Department of Health as the primary reason for his resignation.

Dr. Maseko’s tenure as Secretary-General was marked by notable events, including his suspension from the Gauteng Department of Health in January 2022. The suspension was a result of allegations related to procurement irregularities during the refurbishment of the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital, a project that saw costs escalate from an initial R50 million to over R588 million. During his suspension, Dr. Maseko continued to receive his full salary, amounting to approximately R4.5 million over the suspension period.

In August 2024, Dr. Maseko resigned from his position at the Gauteng Department of Health amid ongoing disciplinary proceedings. This resignation effectively concluded the disciplinary process against him.

The MK Party, under the leadership of former President Jacob Zuma, has experienced several leadership changes in recent months. Prior to Dr. Maseko’s appointment, Arthur Zwane served as Secretary-General but resigned in July 2024, citing workload and business interests. Dr. Maseko was appointed as his successor shortly thereafter.

Dr. Maseko’s decision to step down from his role in the MK Party to return to the Gauteng Department of Health comes after his suspension was lifted, pending the findings of the disciplinary committee that was reviewing his case. This move indicates a resolution of the issues that led to his initial suspension and a reinstatement to his previous role within the department.

The MK Party has yet to announce a successor to Dr. Maseko. The party’s leadership is expected to convene in the coming days to discuss the appointment of a new Secretary-General to ensure continuity in its operations and strategic initiatives.
