Peter Mbae

In a significant development within Kenya’s public service, Dr. Peter Mbae has resigned from his position as the Head of Government Delivery Services (GDS). His resignation, effective immediately, was tendered on January 9, 2025, through a letter addressed to Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei.
Dr. Mbae cited persistent challenges and unresolved issues that hindered his ability to perform his duties effectively. In his resignation letter, he stated: “Despite my passion, focus, and consistency, for reasons and issues that I have consistently brought to your attention and have not been resolved to date, it has not been possible to carry out my duties as intended, and my position as Head of Government Delivery Services is no longer tenable.”
Appointed in June 2024, Dr. Mbae was tasked with overseeing the implementation of government programmes and projects across various ministries, departments, and agencies. His role involved enhancing synergies, eliminating duplications, and prioritising initiatives with significant socio-economic impact.
Prior to his appointment at GDS, Dr. Mbae served as the Head of Ministerial Programmes in the Ministry of Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management. He also held the position of Head of the Ministerial Delivery Unit in the Ministry of Investments, Trade, and Industry.
Dr. Mbae’s resignation comes amid efforts by the Kenyan government to revitalise the GDS unit to expedite the completion of national projects and programmes. The GDS, domiciled under the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, plays a crucial role in monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on the progress of government initiatives.
The government has yet to announce a successor for the position. Dr. Mbae’s departure raises questions about the operational challenges within the GDS and the broader implications for the implementation of government projects.
Dr. Mbae, a former Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Kabazi Ward in Nakuru County, is known for his academic credentials, including a PhD in Peace and Reconciliation and a Master’s in Mass Communication.
