Dr Nasiphi Moya , City of Tshwane Mayor
By Nkosana Khumalo
Dr Nasiphi Moya, the newly appointed Executive Mayor of Tshwane from ActionSA, is set to unveil her mayoral committee on Sunday, October 13. The announcement will take place at Tshwane House, as she takes the reins following her predecessor, the DA’s Cilliers Brink, who was ousted through an ANC-sponsored no-confidence motion. Dr Moya’s appointment comes after months of political turbulence and shifts in the City of Tshwane’s leadership. Her spokesperson, Zintle Mahlati, highlighted that the committee will focus on restoring service delivery across the city .
This change signals a new chapter for Tshwane, with Dr Moya expressing her commitment to addressing pressing service delivery issues. The capital has faced several challenges, including power outages, water shortages, and deteriorating infrastructure. During her acceptance speech, Moya acknowledged the recent political instability and pledged to prioritise the needs of all Tshwane residents.
Coalition Politics Shape Tshwane’s Leadership
Dr Moya’s ascent to mayor was supported by a coalition of the ANC, EFF, ActionSA, and other smaller parties, which secured her victory by 122 votes to 86. This coalition has promised to deliver a unified approach to governance, emphasising stability and improved service delivery. However, the DA has expressed strong opposition, with federal leader Helen Zille warning that the party may withdraw from the Government of National Unity due to the ANC’s actions in Tshwane.
EFF leader Julius Malema has voiced his support for Moya, urging her to “hit the ground running” and ensure that all communities, especially historically neglected areas, receive attention. Malema emphasised the need for equitable service delivery across all areas of Tshwane, calling for an end to the neglect that has disproportionately affected black and coloured communities .
Immediate Challenges: Power Outages and Infrastructure Issues
One of Moya’s first challenges has been addressing recent power outages. The Kwagga electricity substation suffered significant damage, leaving more than half of Tshwane without power. Dr Moya has responded swiftly, coordinating efforts to restore electricity and assuring residents that her administration is focused on resolving these issues promptly.
The political instability of recent months has led to infrastructure neglect, with frequent outages and maintenance delays becoming a norm. Dr Moya has made it clear that her administration’s top priority will be restoring these basic services. Her team has been actively working on plans to improve the city’s water supply and address other infrastructure concerns .
Uniting Tshwane’s Diverse Communities
Dr Moya has promised to be a mayor for all, reaffirming her commitment to serve all four million residents of Tshwane, from townships to suburban areas. She emphasised that her administration would prioritise needs across diverse communities, including Soshanguve, Hammanskraal, and Centurion. This approach aims to bridge the gap between different areas of Tshwane, addressing both affluent suburbs and underserved townships.
In a city as diverse as Tshwane, Dr Moya’s promise to be an inclusive leader is particularly significant. She aims to tackle issues that have historically divided the city, such as unequal access to services and disparities in infrastructure development.
