Dr. Nasiphi Moya was elected unopposed as the Deputy Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality during a council meeting held on Thursday. Dr. Moya, an ActionSA member, assures unwavering commitment and dedication towards the betterment of Tshwane, despite the burden of responsibilities entrusted upon her.

“I am humbled by the trust bestowed on me by ActionSA, our coalition partners, and the entire council. Though new, this role is devoted to ensuring Tshwane and its residents access to requisite services,” said Dr. Moya.

Amid other parties endorsing the Democratic Alliance’s proposal for a deputy mayor position, ActionSA announced Dr. Moya’s nomination on Monday. However, the Economic Freedom Fighters rejected the move.

The creation of this position within Tshwane’s executive guarantees adherence to co-governance principles, thereby enabling stability and service efficiency, according to ActionSA. Moreover, the election of the deputy mayor rectifies previous governmental missteps and boosts the city’s resilience.

Dr. Moya will focus on transversal functions related to infrastructure development, repairs, and maintenance in her new role. She will also manage capital projects, maintaining meticulous monitoring to ensure timely completion and maximum development efficiency.

“This role offers the unique opportunity to deliver infrastructural projects that meet residents’ needs and spur the city’s economic growth,” she added.

The EFF, however, criticized the election of a deputy mayor, considering Tshwane’s financial position. EFF Regional Chairperson Obakeng Ramabodu raised several grave concerns about Dr. Moya’s previous role as Chief of Staff and sought clarification.

In response, ActionSA dismissed the EFF’s claims, labeling them baseless and politically motivated. ActionSA’s Gauteng Provincial Chairperson, Funzi Ngobeni, claimed that the issues raised by EFF should have been addressed to the former Executive Mayor responsible for the trip to Saudi Arabia. Ngobeni vehemently defended Dr. Moya and criticized the EFF for resorting to “cheap political points”.
