Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, the MMC for Public Safety in the City of Joburg, has recently brought attention to the escalating criminal activities happening in Matholeville, Johannesburg. Of particular concern are the increasing incidents of rape perpetrated by zamazamas.
As these illegal mining activities continue to plague the area, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has launched an operation to combat crime and ensure the safety of the local community.

The JMPD/ SAPS joint operation is now in Matholeville. This area is another hotspot of Zamazamas terrorising communities with all kinds of criminal activities.

The urgency to address this problem comes on the heels of the tragic incident in Riverlea, where five suspected illegal miners lost their lives last weekend. This has further emphasized the need for a strong response and a proactive approach towards tackling these criminal activities.
Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku has received numerous complaints and information from the community regarding the zamazamas’ nefarious actions. He shared that a recent shootout occurred between law enforcement officers and the zamazamas, though the criminals managed to evade capture.
Taking a firm stand, Tshwaku expressed his determination to put an end to these activities. He made it clear to the zamazamas and their informers that he will not hesitate to employ force if necessary. “We are not the SAPS, we are JMPD the special unit. When you shoot at us, we will shoot back,” he stated, emphasizing the seriousness with which the authorities are tackling this issue.
The JMPD’s operation in Matholeville marks a significant step in combating crime and protecting the community. By cracking down on illegal mining activities and addressing the criminal acts committed by the zamazamas, law enforcement aims to restore peace and security to the area.
However, it is crucial for community members to provide any relevant information that could aid the ongoing efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
