EFF Member of Parliament , Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi
Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has emerged victorious in a defamation case against Media24 outlet, Daily Sun. The Gauteng High Court ruled in favor of Dr. Ndlozi, labeling the reports published by the newspaper as both unlawful and defamatory.
The reports accused Dr. Ndlozi of committing rape in April 2021. However, the court has ordered Daily Sun to issue an apology and remove the statements from all of its media and social media platforms within a week.

Judge SDJ Wilson presided over the case at the Gauteng South High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday. In addition to removing the defamatory statements, Wilson went further by directing Daily Sun to eradicate the content from its website, Twitter account, and Facebook account.
“The relief sought in paragraphs 3.2, 3.3, 3.4 and 4 of the applicant’s notice of motion is to be determined by reference to oral evidence to be heard by Wilson J on a date and at a time be arranged with his registrar. The affidavits presently filed and their annexures will stand as the pleadings and discovery. Further discovery may be agreed between the parties or authorized by Wilson J on an application brought by either party on reasonable notice to the other,” stated the judgement by Wilson.
As a consequence, Daily Sun has been directed to cover the costs of the application, including the fees of two counsel.
The judgement has been welcomed by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The EFF has called on Media24 to comply with the judgement without delay.
Sinawo Thambo, EFF Spokesperson, has urged Media24 and Daily Sun to issue a public apology at the same level of publication as the defamatory statements.
“We call on them to pay damages and commit to practicing responsible journalism moving forward,” added Thambo.
Thambo also emphasized the importance of not weaponizing this judgement to discredit genuine victims of rape and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
He urged society to unite in the fight against GBV, while cautioning the media fraternity to uphold integrity, thorough research, and verification to prevent the malicious destruction of individuals’ reputations for the sake of sales, profits, and breaking news.
