Dr Duncan Pieterse has been appointed as the new Director-General of the National Treasury, serving a five-year term.
This announcement comes after Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana welcomed the Cabinet’s approval of Pieterse’s appointment.
Pieterse currently holds the position of Deputy Director-General of Asset and Liability Management.
In his new role, the Director-General will provide strategic leadership, guide the department’s organizational structure, and oversee a team of experts responsible for financial management, economic analysis, and policy formulation. The Minister emphasized that the Director-General plays a crucial role in shaping fiscal policies, economic direction, and financial stability within the country.
Pieterse has an impressive track record, having joined the National Treasury in 2013 and worked in various positions over the past decade. He previously served as Deputy Director-General of Economic Policy before assuming the role of Deputy Director-General of Asset and Liability Management. Pieterse holds a Bachelor of Business Science, a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University, and a Doctorate in Philosophy, among other qualifications.
Minister Godongwana expressed his confidence in Pieterse’s ability to meet the demands of this new challenge, stating, “I believe Duncan has more than enough experience, expertise, and chutzpah to make a success of this new challenge.”
To inform the National Treasury’s top management and staff, the Minister held a meeting where he officially announced Dr Pieterse’s appointment. National Treasury stated that the staff welcomed the news and appreciated the certainty provided by the appointment of a permanent Director-General.
Acting DG Ismail Momoniat also expressed his support for Dr Pieterse’s appointment, particularly highlighting the importance of passing the leadership baton to a younger generation.
Minister Godongwana expressed his gratitude to all the applicants for the Director-General position and commended the Acting Director-General for his leadership.
He also mentioned that the Acting DG would continue serving the department for at least a year, ensuring a smooth transition and overseeing key projects aimed at strengthening governance and anti-corruption measures, modernizing the procurement system, and addressing the country’s grey listing.
