Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus)
By Thabo Mosia
The Freedom Front Plus (FF Plus) has elected Dr. Corné Mulder as its new president. The announcement came during the party’s elective conference held in Pretoria today, where Dr. Mulder assumed the role without contest. This change follows Dr. Pieter Groenewald’s decision to step down after a nine-year tenure, during which he notably joined President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Government of National Unity (GNU) as Minister of Correctional Services in July 2024.
Dr. Corné Mulder, born on 28 September 1958, has been a steadfast member of the FF Plus and the National Assembly since 1994. His political journey commenced earlier with his election to the House of Assembly in 1989, representing the Conservative Party. Over the years, Dr. Mulder has held various pivotal roles within the FF Plus, including Chief Parliamentary Whip and leader of the party in the Western Cape. His academic credentials are equally impressive, holding a B.Juris and an LL.B from Potchefstroom University, and having conducted doctoral research at esteemed institutions such as the University of London and the Max-Planck-Institut in Germany.
The leadership change was precipitated by Dr. Pieter Groenewald’s decision not to seek re-election. Dr. Groenewald, who has been at the party’s helm since November 2016, expressed that he had reached the end of his leadership season. In July 2024, he expanded his political horizons by accepting the role of Minister of Correctional Services in President Ramaphosa’s GNU, marking a historic inclusion of the FF Plus in the national cabinet.
FF Plus Member of Parliament, Wouter Wessels, elaborated on the transition: “Dr. Groenewald did step down this morning as leader. He did not avail himself again to be elected and he said he has reached the end of the season in which he led the FF Plus. He became leader in 2016 and he decided that it is time at this stage to focus on his role as Minister and his role in Cabinet and the Government of National Unity and that he gives over the reins of the party to a new leader and that new leader Corné Mulder was elected uncontested.”
Despite the leadership change, the FF Plus has assured its members and supporters that the party’s core values and objectives remain steadfast. Wessels emphasized continuity, stating, “There is a lot of support for Dr. Groenewald out there, a lot of people who believe in him who voted for us because they associate with him and they do have respect for his stances and his character. But we believe that we are a new leadership and we have the same core values and we will communicate that and he will also communicate that he did not go away from the party and he is still playing his role as minister.”
The FF Plus, established in 1994, has consistently positioned itself as a voice for minority rights in South Africa, with a particular emphasis on Afrikaner interests. Under Dr. Groenewald’s leadership, the party experienced a resurgence, notably increasing its parliamentary representation in the 2019 general elections. However, the 2024 elections saw a slight decline, with the party securing six seats in the National Assembly. In a strategic move, the FF Plus joined the ANC-led Government of National Unity in June 2024, with Dr. Groenewald’s ministerial appointment underscoring the party’s commitment to active participation in national governance.
Dr. Mulder’s unopposed election signifies a unified front within the FF Plus as it navigates the evolving political landscape of South Africa. His extensive experience and longstanding dedication to the party are anticipated to guide the FF Plus in its continued advocacy for minority rights and its active role within the GNU.
