SA Air Force

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has confirmed that a South African Air Force (SAAF) King Air aircraft lost its passenger-side door shortly after take-off from Lanseria International Airport on Friday, 11 April 2025. The detached door was later recovered from a farm erf located just north of the airport precinct and has been transported to Air Force Base Waterkloof for further examination.
Rear Admiral (Junior Grade) Prince Tshabalala, SANDF spokesperson, stated that the incident did not result in any injuries or damage to property. “Upon inspection of the area where the door was located and as confirmed by the farm owner, it was established that there was no damage to infrastructure nor was there any loss of life suffered on the farm,” he said. The aircraft, operated by 41 Squadron, managed to complete its flight and landed safely at its home base in Centurion.
According to defence sources, the aircraft involved is a twin-engined Beechcraft B200C King Air, designated as tail number 650. It was on a maintenance flight at the time of the incident. The SANDF has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the door detachment. Preliminary reports suggest that the aircraft had recently undergone servicing, and the incident occurred during a post-maintenance check flight.
This event has raised concerns about the maintenance and operational readiness of the SAAF fleet. Recent assessments have highlighted challenges within the air force, including budget constraints and maintenance backlogs, which have affected aircraft availability and serviceability. The SANDF has acknowledged these issues and is reportedly taking steps to address them.
The SANDF has assured the public that safety remains a top priority and that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The findings of the ongoing investigation will inform any required corrective actions to ensure the continued airworthiness of the fleet.
