President-elect Donald Trump has declared that resolving the Ukraine crisis will be his foremost priority upon taking office next month, asserting that the Middle East presents a comparatively “less difficult situation.”

In an interview with French magazine Paris Match, recorded on Saturday and released on Wednesday, Trump emphasised the urgency of addressing the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. He noted the staggering human cost, stating, “Both those countries are losing numbers that nobody can believe. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers are being killed.”

Trump underscored the necessity of swift action to halt the ongoing loss of life, remarking, “We have to solve the Ukraine problem with Russia… A lot of people are dying.”

This stance aligns with Trump’s previous assertions that he could end the Ukraine conflict within 24 hours, highlighting his commitment to expeditiously broker peace in the region.

During his recent visit to Paris for the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral, Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Following their discussions, Zelensky expressed gratitude for Trump’s “strong resolve” to end the war in Ukraine.

However, Zelensky also emphasised the importance of securing reliable security guarantees before entering any peace agreement, aiming to prevent future Russian aggression. This caution reflects concerns in Kyiv that Trump’s approach might pressure Ukraine into ceding territory to Russia by threatening to cut off U.S. military aid.

In response to these concerns, Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire and the commencement of negotiations, reiterating his commitment to a swift resolution. He has also indicated a desire to reduce U.S. involvement in other conflicts, stating that “Syria will have to take care of itself,” signalling a potential shift in American foreign policy focus.
