In a recent meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Trump Tower in New York, former U.S. President Donald Trump created a stir by openly praising his “very good relationship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The encounter, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, was marked by awkward exchanges and raised questions about Trump’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a matter of global concern since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Trump’s comments came during a joint press conference where both leaders spoke about their perspectives on the ongoing war. While Zelensky reiterated that the war needs to be stopped, emphasizing that “Putin can’t win,” Trump shifted the conversation to his personal relationship with both Zelensky and Putin, declaring, “I have a very good relationship with President Putin” .

This statement, made in the presence of Zelensky, was widely perceived as insensitive given the context of the ongoing war, where Putin is seen as the aggressor. Trump went on to remark that achieving peace between Ukraine and Russia “takes two to tango,” suggesting that both sides needed to work together toward an agreement, an approach Trump has advocated since he announced his bid for the 2024 U.S. Presidential election.

Trump’s Strained History with Ukraine

The relationship between Trump and Zelensky has been tense since Trump’s first impeachment in 2019, which stemmed from a controversial phone call where Trump pressured Zelensky to investigate then-candidate Joe Biden. Trump had withheld $400 million in military aid to Ukraine during that period, a decision that intensified scrutiny of his relationship with both Ukraine and Russia. Despite these tensions, Trump acknowledged during the meeting that Zelensky “stood by him” during the impeachment process, remarking that the Ukrainian leader had stated at the time, “President Trump did absolutely nothing wrong” .

However, since the start of the Russian invasion, Trump has repeatedly criticized U.S. support for Ukraine, suggesting that Ukraine should be more open to negotiations with Russia. This stance contrasts sharply with the Biden administration’s robust support for Ukraine, which includes billions in military aid and defense systems like Patriot missile batteries .

Zelensky’s Response

In response to Trump’s comments, Zelensky appeared composed but subtly voiced his desire for better relations between Ukraine and the United States. He remarked, “I hope we have more good relations with us,” subtly countering Trump’s focus on his relationship with Putin. Zelensky maintained that the war must end with a Ukrainian victory, a position that aligns with much of the international community’s stance on Russia’s invasion .

Zelensky has faced challenges throughout his global diplomatic tour, especially in engaging with U.S. leaders as he seeks to secure continued support for Ukraine. In contrast to his meetings with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, where Ukraine’s military needs were at the forefront, the interaction with Trump highlighted the stark differences in foreign policy approaches between Trump and his Democratic counterparts.

Trump’s Vision for the Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Throughout his campaign, Trump has repeatedly claimed that, if re-elected, he would end the war in Ukraine “very quickly” through a negotiated settlement. Critics, however, argue that his approach would force Ukraine into making concessions that could legitimize Russia’s territorial claims and undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty. Trump has also suggested that the U.S. should reduce its defense aid to Ukraine, a move that many believe would weaken Kyiv’s ability to resist Russian aggression .

His remarks during the meeting have further sparked criticism from both political opponents and foreign policy experts. Some observers believe that Trump’s stance on Ukraine reflects a broader disinterest in holding Russia accountable for its actions, while others argue that his statements may embolden Russia by downplaying its role in the conflict.
