27 officials have been dismissed for various forms of serious misconduct within the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DJCOD). The dismissals form part of a broader consequence management initiative aimed at fostering clean governance within the department, reflecting the government’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.
“These dismissals are part of 81 appeal matters recorded by the Department, which include 55 dismissals, 25 suspensions, and one warning,” stated the DJCOD in a recent press release. The department emphasized that these measures were necessary to address severe cases of misconduct that have the potential to undermine public trust in the justice system.
A Range of Misconducts Addressed
The misconduct cases leading to these dismissals span a wide range, including fraud, theft, sexual harassment, and bringing the department into disrepute. Additionally, absenteeism, abuse of state vehicles, and insubordination were among the infractions that prompted this strong response from the DJCOD.
This crackdown is a significant step toward addressing corruption and other unethical behaviors within the department. The DJCOD’s leadership has been under increasing pressure to ensure that all officials adhere to the ethical standards expected in a department tasked with upholding justice in South Africa.

The DJCOD has reiterated its commitment to finalizing all appeals lodged with the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development. “The [DJCOD] remains resolute in its commitment to finalise all appeals lodged with the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development and continues to strengthen its internal controls to combat any conduct that undermines its ability to deliver justice services effectively and efficiently,” the department said.
This statement underscores the DJCOD’s dedication to reinforcing internal controls, ensuring that any behavior that could tarnish the department’s reputation is dealt with swiftly and appropriately. The department’s commitment to clean governance is evident in the robust measures being taken to address misconduct at all levels.
