Tsakane, Ekurhuleni – The District Development Model (DDM) Presidential Imbizo, currently taking place at Tsakane Stadium in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, marks a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to resolve critical service delivery challenges in South Africa. Spearheaded by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the event underscores the importance of collaboration across all three spheres of government—national, provincial, and local—to tackle pressing issues faced by communities.

The DDM, a strategic initiative aimed at improving service delivery through integrated planning and execution, has been a focal point of the seventh administration’s governance strategy. As articulated by Velenkosini Hlabisa, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the DDM facilitates a coordinated response to shared problems within districts, such as water shortages and crime, by pooling resources and efforts across municipalities within a district.

Addressing Water and Crime Challenges in Ekurhuleni

During the Imbizo, water scarcity emerged as the primary concern for the residents of Ekurhuleni, followed closely by crime. Minister Hlabisa highlighted the critical nature of these issues, stressing that the DDM allows for a unified approach where different levels of government work together on a single, comprehensive plan to address these challenges. This approach not only ensures that resources are efficiently utilized but also enhances accountability among the various governmental entities involved.

A Platform for Community Engagement

One of the most significant aspects of the DDM Presidential Imbizo is its role as a platform for direct interaction between government leaders and the people they serve. President Ramaphosa and his cabinet, along with provincial and local officials, are engaging directly with the community, listening to their concerns, and providing immediate responses where possible. This face-to-face interaction is crucial for fostering trust and ensuring that the voices of ordinary South Africans are heard at the highest levels of government.

Minister Hlabisa emphasized the unique opportunity this Imbizo presents, stating, “There is nothing as important as meeting your government face-to-face. It’s not just about greeting and going, but about conveying your challenges and engaging them.” This interaction allows for real-time problem-solving and ensures that the concerns raised are addressed promptly and effectively.

Supporting Healthcare Through the Phelophepha Train

As part of the build-up to the Imbizo, the Phelophepha Train, a mobile healthcare initiative by Transnet, has been providing critical health services to the communities in Ekurhuleni. This initiative is a prime example of how the DDM extends beyond infrastructure to include essential services like healthcare. Residents of Tembisa and surrounding areas have benefited from free medical services, including eye care, dental care, and chronic disease management, all delivered right at their doorstep. The train’s presence is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving the well-being of its citizens through innovative and accessible solutions.
