Be a Wise Spender: The Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) Urges Consumers to Save During Black Friday and Festive Season
The Free State Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) is urging consumers to be wise spenders and save during the Black Friday and festive season. As the consumer spending period has arrived, it is important for individuals to change their spending patterns and focus on critical items such as next year’s school uniform, school fees, and investments.
Mojalefa Mphapang, the spokesperson for DESTEA, warns that criminals are stepping up their efforts to take advantage of consumers searching for bargains during this period. Therefore, it is important for consumers to be cautious and mindful of potential scams. Lack of financial education and planning are contributing factors to overspending, as most consumers fail to consider growing inflation and rising interest rates.
Thabo Meeko, the MEC of DESTEA, emphasizes the importance of being a smart consumer during Black Friday and the festive season. He advises the public to be on the lookout for fraudsters and online scams, and urges them to avoid deals that sound too good to be true. Clicking on unverified offers and links should also be done with caution. Meeko urges consumers to be vigilant with their hard-earned money, car keys, and bank cards, and to always shop with January in mind.
DESTEA, through their Consumer Protection Office, will be working closely with law enforcement agencies to crack down on those selling fake goods and illicit food and alcohol. It is crucial for consumers to be aware of their rights and to report any suspicious activities or products.
To become a smart consumer during Black Friday and the festive season, here are some tips to follow:
1. Plan ahead before spending and create a budget that aligns with your financial capabilities.
2. Differentiate between wants and needs, and prioritize your needs.
3. Shop around for the best deals and compare prices.
4. Be cautious of “buy now and pay later” deals, as they may lead to overspending.
5. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and opt for safer payment methods.
6. Remember that it is within your right to reject or ignore any deal or request that doesn’t seem genuine.
It is important to note that bills such as electricity and water do not go on holidays over the festive season, and they will still need to be paid in the new year. Consumers should plan accordingly to avoid any financial difficulties.
