DESTEA hosts the Eco-Schools Awards.

The Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA) hosted the Eco-Schools Awards on Thursday , 10 March 2022, at Bon Hotel in Bloemfontein.

Eco-Schools is an International program of the Foundation for Environmental Education that was developed to support environmental learning in the classroom.

The program is active in almost 70 countries around the world and has been implemented in South Africa since 2003 by WESSA ( the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa).

A total of 55 schools throughout the Free State from the 5 districts of the municipalities have participated in the Eco-Schools program.

Small Green Flags are awarded to schools with three years and three projects in the program. A large Green Flag is an International green flag with five years and five projects.

Hohle Intermediate School from Botshabelo received a Diamond Decade Green Flag for participating for more than 10 years in the program.
