Deputy President's Office Issues Letter of Intent to Suspend Spokesperson Vukani Mde Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations

The Deputy President’s Office has issued a statement in response to the recent article published by Sunday World on 18 February 2024, which made allegations of sexual harassment against Vukani Mde, Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s spokesperson.

Sunday World’s report alleged that Mde had made sexually suggestive comments and sent improper messages to a senior female staffer in the Deputy President’s office. The published claims suggest that these actions included messages that were “sexual in nature” to her work cellphone, and unwelcome comments about her “sex life and her looks,” as well as inappropriate propositions mixed with official work communication.

In a swift response to the allegations, the Deputy President’s Chief of Staff, Mduduzi Mbada, has taken action, as noted by the office’s statement.

“The Chief of Staff has briefed the Deputy President that a letter of intention to suspend Mr Mde, in light of the allegations against him, was issued and hand-delivered to the spokesperson, Mr Vukani Mde,” the office communicated.

The Office stressed that contrary to the accusations of protecting Mr. Mde, they are actively pursuing an investigation. “The Deputy President is aware that there is a process underway in the Presidency to investigate the allegations made against Mde by one of the senior employees in the office, and is of the view that all due processes should be adhered to,” the statement continued.

In his condemnation of gender-based violence, Deputy President Mashatile made his stance clear: “The Deputy President has since condemned any form of gender-based violence, especially against women, and said he believes that all employees should be protected from any victimisation.”

Concluding their announcement, the Office of the Deputy President gave assurance of their commitment to addressing the issue and maintaining transparency. “The Office of the Deputy President wishes to assure that this matter is given the necessary attention it deserves and will provide an update in due course.”
