Pretoria, South Africa – Deputy President Paul Mashatile is set to deliver the keynote address at the inaugural Ronnie Mamoepa Annual Lecture on Friday, 13 September 2024. The event, hosted at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Pretoria campus, will honour the life and legacy of the late Ronnie Mamoepa, one of South Africa’s most revered struggle heroes and a pioneer in government communications.
Organised by the Ronnie Mamoepa Foundation, this lecture seeks to commemorate Mamoepa’s contributions to shaping South Africa’s democratic narrative. Mamoepa, who passed away in July 2017 at the age of 56, was a dedicated public servant known for his unwavering commitment to freedom and democracy. He played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the government and the public, serving as a key figure in government communications until his last role as the spokesperson for then-Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.
Mashatile’s address will revolve around the theme “30 Years of Democracy: Reflection and Citizen-Centered Government Communications.” This theme underlines the significance of accountable, transparent, and citizen-focused communication—values that Mamoepa embodied throughout his career. The Deputy President is expected to reflect on the progress made since the dawn of democracy in 1994 and emphasise the importance of ongoing engagement between the government and South African citizens.
The lecture also aims to spark discussions on the future of democratic communication, particularly in the context of modern challenges, such as misinformation and disengagement from the political process. The event serves not only as a tribute to Mamoepa’s lasting impact but also as a platform for reinforcing the role of government communications in a democratic society.
This inaugural lecture will attract a diverse audience, including government officials, media professionals, and members of the public who were inspired by Mamoepa’s life and work. The Ronnie Mamoepa Foundation, established in his memory, continues to promote values of public service and effective communication, key to upholding the principles of democracy in South Africa.
The event marks a pivotal moment in remembering a stalwart of South Africa’s democratic journey and provides a space to critically evaluate how far the country has come in fostering an inclusive and transparent government communication structure.
