Moiloa, affectionately known as Uhuru, died suddenly at the age of 62 after collapsing at his home in Kagiso, with his family pointing to a possible stroke as the cause. As a long-serving African National Congress (ANC) member and Gauteng Provincial Legislature stalwart, his death has drawn widespread condolences from political leaders, highlighting his legacy in youth development, housing, and community upliftment.
Details Surrounding Moiloa’s Passing and Family’s Response
Moiloa collapsed at his home on Friday, 29 August 2025, and passed away the next day, leaving behind a grieving family and community. His family believes the cause was a stroke, a sudden health event that took the life of this dedicated public servant. The ANC’s Nape Phadi Branch, where Moiloa was active, confirmed his death in a statement, with branch coordinator Gift Khoza describing him as a pillar of strength and a committed leader. The family has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, as tributes poured in from across the political spectrum.
Born in 1963, Moiloa was a father and grandfather, known for his deep roots in Kagiso, where he lived and worked tirelessly for local improvement. His sudden departure has left a void in his family, who are now preparing for his memorial and funeral services amid shared stories of his kindness and dedication.
Political Career and Contributions of Dikgang Uhuru Moiloa
Moiloa had a distinguished career in public service, spanning decades within the ANC and Gauteng government. He served as MEC for Housing in the Gauteng Provincial Government, where he focused on providing homes for the needy and tackling urban development challenges. Before that, he held various portfolios in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, including roles in human settlements, economic development, and community safety. His work earned him respect for pushing policies that aimed to uplift poor communities and promote social justice.
As a champion of ANC renewal, Moiloa was seen as a principled revolutionary and an organic intellectual within the movement. He was deeply involved in youth empowerment, often mentoring young leaders and advocating for education and skills development. His nickname “Uhuru,” meaning freedom in Swahili, reflected his commitment to the liberation struggle and post-apartheid transformation. Colleagues remember him as a loyalist who never wavered in his support for the ANC’s ideals, even during tough times.
Moiloa’s activism dated back to the anti-apartheid era, where he played a key role in community organising in Kagiso. He was instrumental in initiatives like housing projects that benefited thousands of families in Gauteng’s townships. His efforts in economic development helped create jobs and support small businesses, leaving a lasting impact on the province’s growth.
Tributes from Political Leaders and ANC Officials
Deputy President Paul Mashatile, who also serves as ANC Deputy President, extended his condolences in a statement and led a delegation to Moiloa’s family home in Kagiso on Monday, 1 September 2025. Accompanied by ANC Youth League President Collen Malatji and Regional Chair William Mathafeng Matsheke, Mashatile honoured Moiloa’s legacy as a disciplined cadre and servant of the people. “I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of comrade Dikgang “Uhuru” Moiloa who passed away on Saturday. ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula visited the family on Sunday, 31 August 2025, describing Moiloa as a great leader and loyalist. Speaking outside the home, Mbalula said: “In comrade Uhuru, we have lost a great leader, we have lost a principled leader, we have lost a champion of ANC renewal, we have lost a revolutionary to the act. In comrade Uhuru, we have lost an organic intellectual of our movement. In comrade Uhuru, we have lost a loyalist.” He shared a video of his tribute, emphasising Moiloa’s role in renewing the ANC.
Other ANC leaders, including Gauteng Provincial Secretary TK Nciza and Premier Panyaza Lesufi, also paid homage. The ANC Youth League joined in, with President Malatji reflecting on Moiloa’s life as a true revolutionary during the Monday visit. The party’s official statement bowed its banners in deep respect, mourning the loss of a comrade who dedicated his life to the struggle.
Memorial and Funeral Arrangements
A memorial service for Moiloa is scheduled for Wednesday, 3 September 2025, at 14:00 at Chief Mogale Hall in Kagiso. This gathering will allow friends, family, and comrades to share memories and celebrate his contributions.
