Mamoepa hailed from the dusty streets of Pheli (Atteridgeville) and joined the movement to fight for freedom when it was not fashionable to do so. Mashatile emphasized that the youth, including Mamoepa, played a crucial role in opposing the apartheid regime. Mamoepa recognized that his future and the futures of generations to come were dependent on their fight for liberation.

The Deputy President highlighted that Mamoepa played an instrumental role in building the ANC in Gauteng and had the skills and capacity to become one of the best communicators. Mamoepa served as the spokesperson for then Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa before his passing in 2017. Mashatile expressed his gratitude to Mamoepa and individuals like Thabo Masebe for their contributions in establishing the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), which has become a vital communication machinery for the government.

Mashatile believes that for Mamoepa and his contemporaries to be honored, government institutions such as the GCIS, the National School of Government, and educational institutions should incorporate political communication and research into their programs to learn from their legacy.

The Deputy President also expressed his gratitude to Freedom Park for hosting the commemoration through the establishment of the Ronnie Mamoepa Foundation. During the event, a wreath was laid at the Wall of Names at Freedom Park, where Mamoepa’s name now stands alongside other esteemed heroes and heroines who contributed to the liberation struggle.

Under the theme of “Recommitting the legacy of Ronnie Mamoepa through social activism,” the Deputy President emphasized that the event served as a call to all citizens to follow in Mamoepa’s footsteps of selflessness, dedication, and humanity. Mashatile described Mamoepa as a defender of freedom and democracy, a seasoned government communicator, and a dedicated public servant.

Mamoepa was known for his exceptional courage, determination, and compassion. He tirelessly advocated for the rights of the marginalized and oppressed. Mashatile reflected on how Mamoepa fearlessly spoke out against injustice, fought against discrimination, and worked towards creating a more inclusive society. Mashatile believes that Mamoepa’s legacy serves as a beacon of hope, reminding all of their shared responsibility to create equitable and just communities.

The Deputy President posed a thought-provoking question: How would Ronnie have responded to the current socio-political challenges facing our country? He believes that Mamoepa would have been concerned about the plight of the people and would have advocated for unity and accountability. Mamoepa would have questioned the progress made in addressing the challenges of poverty, unemployment, and inequality.

Mashatile commended the GCIS for renaming their Press Room the Ronnie Mamoepa Media Centre as a tribute to the fallen hero. He also offered words of comfort to Mamoepa’s widow and children and assured them that Mamoepa’s legacy will live on.
